Photography studies is a new, innovative and rapidly expanding interdisciplinary area of study and an integral part of the emerging field of visual culture studies. It seeks to analyse and account for the ways in which the visual now permeates all spheres of everyday human experience. The MA in the Photographic Image offers training in the development of knowledge, skills and understanding in the study of photography theory, history and analysis, and does so from an intercultural perspective. It focuses on the intersections of photography, discourses around photography and constructions of cultural identity across a range of contexts and chronologies: from the coded and highly conventional snapshots of the family, through the images that document and commemorate the events in collective history, to specific instances of photography and war. The MA in the Photographic Image is unique in the UK, and has been developed by a team of researchers based in the departments of French, German and Spanish who share an interest and are actively involved in publishing and advancing photography studies. The team also runs Durham Centre for Advanced Photography Studies, organising a regular series of seminars and international conferences.
The programme consists of five modules: two core modules, an optional module, a Dissertation, and a research skills module which you will take along with other postgraduates in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures.
