Location of The University of Edinburgh

Teaching and research in European archaeology has a distinguished tradition in the University of Edinburgh, where there are several clusters of specialist research areas, including: late hunter-gatherers and early farmers; megalithic monuments; environmental archaeology; experimental archaeology; the prehistory of Scotland; Celtic art; and Iron Age Europe.

This masters programme is designed to provide candidates with the opportunity to study European archaeology at an advanced level, through a tailored and flexible combination of courses enabling them to develop an understanding of current theories, methodologies and major research issues, as well as knowledge of specific periods and regions. The topics covered are also designed to introduce students to current research themes, staff research projects and potential PhD subjects, while providing a good foundation for future participation in excavation, survey and/or lab work.

The programme uses primarily lectures and seminars for teaching and a variety of forms of continual assessment (there are no exams). It benefits from excellent local learning resources, cross-collaborative links and the presence of a programme director with relevant expertise, available to assist with course choices and the development of dissertation topics.

Contents

The programme can either be taken over one year (full-time), or over two years (part-time). All candidates take six courses over the two teaching semesters (September-March), equivalent to 20 credits each (normally 20 hours contact time). In order to proceed to the dissertation for the MSc, candidates must achieve an overall mark of 50% in their assessed work. The dissertation of approximately 15,000 words counts for a further 60 credits and is submitted at the end of the programme year (normally mid-September).

All candidates take the following compulsory Course:

* Research Sources and Strategies in Archaeology

In addition, candidates must choose five further courses from those offered by staff in Archaeology. The following two lists show the relevant courses for this degree which will be on offer in Archaeology over the next two years. Please note, however, that changes may be made to these courses and it is possible that additional courses may subsequently become available. Candidates may either choose all their options from List A or choose a minimum of three options from List A and a maximum of two options from List B to make up the required total.

It may also be possible for candidates to choose a course from among those offered within another MSc programme of the University (e.g. Celtic or History), if deemed relevant to the theme of European archaeology.
