IMEC combines marine environmental science with management, consultancy and enterprise skills. The modules, case-studies, workshops and projects are supported by industry, government and non-governmental organisations, as well as other academic institutions and include: Royal-Haskoning; Halcrow; Atkins (Coastal Environment); ERM; Environment Agency; and Wood Holmes.
Compulsory taught modules (90 credits) typically include: critical appraisal of coastal systems; marine environmental research skills; project management application; business entrepreneurship; coastal governance; and environmental impact assessment.
Optional modules (20 credits) typically include: options for flood risk management; sustainable world aquaculture; principles and practice of integrated coastal management; fisheries assessment and management; and renewable energy - policy, politics and ethics. Modules include a diverse range of teaching methods including lectures, practical classes, workshops and in-depth case studies of real consultancy projects in the marine environment.
The MSc culminates in a four-month internship period, where you will be supported and supervised by experienced academic researchers and active marine sector consultants in either a UK/EU or international consultancy, whilst undertaking your marine project for assessment (70 credits). You will have the opportunity to select a partner with whom to develop your consultancy project, working in Newcastle or within a partner’s business off-campus. Extra costs may be incurred during the consultancy project phase as part of this programme; however, some financial support may be available.
