As a postgraduate student in our French Department you will also have the opportunity to use the facilities of the Maison Française in Oxford, and in particular its library. Members of Oxford Brookes´ French Department have organised many of the conferences and seminars hosted by the Maison Francaise, with our postgraduate students fully involved in the experience, including the presentation of papers. Part of the CNRS, the Maison Francaise is a unique space for research and joint initiatives in Franco-British university relations, and plays a key role in the development of international co-operation and the promotion of French research abroad.

Oxford Brookes´ French Department also houses the CESAR project (Calendrier Electronique des Spectacles sous l´Ancien Régime) including CESAR IMAGES: an online searchable repository of images relating to the French theatre of the 17th and 18th centuries, including stage sets, scenes from plays and portraits and supported by a full range of descriptive and contextual information.

Contents

This new MA by Research in French builds on our research expertise to offer you a clearly focused programme of study. You will have the opportunity to develop a high level of subject knowledge, together with the ability to develop and undertake independent research in your own particular area of interest.

The programme will be attractive to applicants seeking to pursue intellectual interests beyond first-degree level for further personal or professional development. The MA by Research route is also designed to prepare you to undertake further research at MPhil or PhD level.

Alongside some research training, you will embark on a substantial piece of independent research (an MA thesis of up to 30,000 words) guided by your supervisor in regular meetings. A shorter assessment of 5,000 words, conceived as a formative essay, precedes the dissertation in the programme. A viva voce examination is held at the end.
