Technical communication is a new discipline, which has developed in response to the expanding role of technology in people's lives. It involves writing manuals (e.g. for the IT industry), online help, tutorials, web sites, and other types of documentation, both online and paper. It can also involve editing, and writing instructions, reports, and abstracts.
The technical writer tries to write about technical products in a simple and effective way, so that the audience can easily understand them. The courses at UL emphasise that the discipline entails more than writing-speech communication, writing, graphics, animation, layout and design all play a part, and we include input on all of these topics.
UL now offers a Graduate Certificate in Technical Writing by Distance Learning. This programme commenced in 2001.
Aims and objectives
The aim of this distance learning Graduate Certificate in Technical Writing is to offer flexible access to the Technical Writing programme for people who cannot attend full time. The specific objectives are:
* To provide distance learning students with a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of technical writing.
* To provide people who lack qualifications in technical writing with access to certification via distance learning.
The programme consists of four modules. Students can complete the programme in two semesters, taking two modules in the autumn, and two in the spring.
Or they can spread the course over four semesters (two academic years), taking one module each semester.
Note: Feedback from students taking the programme indicates that one module per semester is more manageable for people working full-time while taking the course. Suggested study time per module: At least 65 hours minimum.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
