Location of University of Limerick

The Graduate Diploma in Education (Business) is an one year, full time course of study designed to enable business graduates become second level teachers of business subjects. Holders of the GDE(B) are recognised to teach business studies across a range of areas including second level education, further education and community settings. They qualify for the same allowances as holders of the Higher Diploma in Education (H.Dip.Ed.) and for admission to the Teaching Council of Ireland register.

Objectives

* To provide graduates with a professional qualification for the teaching of accounting, business, computer applications, economics, language, and secretarial studies;
* To develop students' personal and practical skills to advanced competency;
* To enable students to identify areas where those skills complement technology in education, business and training;
* To encourage students to develop and utilise alternative evaluation and assessment strategies and become effective facilitators of learning.

Careers

Graduates from this course are enabled to teach a wide range of subjects across a number of programmes. Since its inception, there has been a consistently strong demand for teachers with this qualification. The majority of GDE(B) graduates opt for teaching in second level schools. Others have secured employment in the further education sector, international education sector, alternative education sector, community education and adult education settings.

Requirements

To apply for the course, an applicant must possess a level 8 honours primary degree where the holder is required to have studied at least one business subject, comprising 30% of one's studies and taken throughout each year of the undergraduate course and, additionally, which is recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland for eligibility to teach the business subject(s) concerned or its equivalent. (The issue of equivalence refers to undergradute studies undertaken outside of the Republic of Ireland. In this instance, a direct application to the Teaching Council of Ireland to establish whether one meets the above criterion is advisable well in advance of the application closing date).

All applications are assessed and points ranked to determine who will be called to interview. If invited to interview, personal attendance is required. Interviews normally take place sometime between late March and late April. All interviewees are points ranked based on qualifications, experiences and interview performance. Offers of places on the course are sequentially made to interview candidates based on points score levels obtained. Up to a maximum of fifty places may be offered.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

As all international students are required to possess sufficient language skills to attend lectures and sit examinations at the University of Limerick, students should be competent to communicate through the medium of English prior to their arrival.

Students must have a minimum score of 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based) in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score in the range of 6.5-7 and not less than 6.0 in any one component.
