Location of University of Limerick

This course offers an exceptional opportunity for science and engineering graduates to obtain a professionally recognised qualification in Chemical Engineering in only one calendar year full-time, or two years part-time. It will appeal to individuals with a science or engineering background who wish to develop or change their career towards the process or pharmaceuticals industries.

To equip students with the detailed knowledge and skills necessary to move into the challenging and well-paid profession of chemical engineering.

Graduates of this course are in high demand by major Irish and multinational companies for employment as chemical/process/project engineers in a wide range of process industries: pharmaceutical, chemical, energy, oil, biochemical, food & drink, water, consumer goods, etc. Graduates have been employed also by companies making components, equipment or plant for the biomedical, IT, and healthcare industries.


Contents

Semester 1

Principles of Chemical Engineering; Fluid Mechanics & Heat Transfer; Chemical Reaction Engineering; Mass Transfer Separations; Chemical Engineering Design Methods 1; Advanced Engineering Maths.

Semester 2

Fluid Process Control; Batch (Pharmaceutical) Process Engineering; Plant & Process Management; Advanced Transport Processes; Chemical Engineering Design Methods 2; Design Project 1.

Semester 3 (June-July)

Design Project 2.

As well as learning the relevant theory, students are given laboratory training on the practical aspects of processing operations, and they also have the opportunity to gain expertise in the use of a number of industry-standard chemical engineering design and simulation software packages.

The programme includes a series of one-day plant visits, where students get a chance to tour chemical processing facilities and to interact first-hand with chemical engineering professionals. A medal and prize is awarded each year by Merck Sharp & Dohme Ltd for the student graduating with highest marks.

Requirements

Applicants should normally have a primary degree at second-class honours level or above in a relevant branch of science or engineering (e.g. Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry or Biochemistry, Physics, Biotechnology, Environmental, Food or Materials Science, Mechanical, Environmental or Food Engineering).

They must also show evidence of proficiency in chemistry and mathematics, particularly in differential and integral calculus and differential equations. Applications are especially welcome from graduates with work experience.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

As all international students are required to possess sufficient language skills to attend lectures and sit examinations at the University of Limerick, students should be competent to communicate through the medium of English prior to their arrival. Students must have a minimum score of 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based) 80 (internet based) in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score in the range of 6.5-7 and not less than 6.0 in any one component.
