Location of Institut D'Optique Graduate School

Partner establishments:Institut d'Optique Graduate School (coordinating institution); Université Paris-Sud (Orsay); Ecole Polytechnique (Palaiseau) from September 2012; Technical University Delft (Netherlands); Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (Germany); Imperial College London (UK) until September 2011; University of Eastern Finland (Joensuu) from September 2012; Warsaw University of Technology (Poland).

Optics is essential to science and industry in the modern world. The biosciences, medical technology, quantum physics, telecommunications, optical systems, mechatronics and image analysis all rely heavily on optical sciences. This course offers comprehensive coverage of the field of optics from upstream scientific aspects to engineering and applications in major economic sectors.

Students in the two-year programme study at two institutions in different countries for one year. The objective is to train highly-skilled and qualified graduates for technical or scientific positions in industries specializing in optics or using optics. A logical extension of this coursework would be to pursue a PhD at the cutting edge of new technologies.

The language of instruction is English, and examinations may be taken in English at all the sites. Additionally, local language courses are available at all the institutions. It is expected that twenty European students and twenty students from the rest of the world will be admitted each year.

The course is made up of study-tracks jointly devised by the partner institutions. Core courses in fundamentals of optical sciences are provided on all sites as well as laboratory work and development of transferable skills. Advanced courses vary depending on the specific areas of excellence of each institution. Project and Master´s thesis work are carried out in leading academic or industrial research environments.

At the end of each academic year all students attend a one-week summer workshop at a different location. The activities include seminars and tutorials given by visiting scholars, academic staff and professionals from the optics and related industries. Master´s thesis dissertations are presented by the graduating students and opportunities at partner institutions are presented.

Each successful graduate is awarded the Master´s degrees of the two institutions where he or she has studied.

Contents

The first year course at all partner establishments is intended to give students a good grounding in optical sciences by comprehensive course and practical work, project work and transferable skills. This will include the fundamentals of optics and materials (ray optics, optical electromagnetism, guided waves, light-matter interaction in dilute and condensed matter, nonlinear optics, quantum optics and wave propagation) and a modern language (generally the local language).

The second year destination will depend on the student's areas of interest and research. Broadly speaking each of the sites has a major area of specialisation ranging from optical devices and systems to imaging science and image analysis, optomechatronics, biophotonics, nanophotonics, new lasers, telecommunications, quantum information and atom optics. The Master's thesis carried out during the second semester of the second year will be conducted in a major research laboratory.

Coursework is in English on all sites but students will be given the opportunity to learn the local language at each site.
