This course aims to enable participants to appreciate a wide range of Christian belief, culture and practice throughout the world, in historical, theological, and sociological contexts.
It provides both a broad introduction to World Christianity (with concentration on Africa and Asia) and an opportunity for more in-depth study of specific aspects of the topic.
The degree to study in depth Christian practice, thought and history in Asia, especially though not only China, India and Korea; Africa, especially West and South; and Latin America. The course can' round off' an undergraduate degree in theology, religious studies or related field or expand perspectives of those currently employed it gives a thorough grounding for those intending to apply for a PhD in some aspect of Christianity in the world.
Learning Outcomes
Students who follow the programme successfully will gain a detailed understanding of the major issues facing Christianity as a worldwide religion, and will develop experience in designing and conducting a research project (the dissertation).
The course involves a 12 month (September-September) period of study by full-time registration. Part-time is permitted over 24 months. The curriculum is made up of two elements:
* Core Course: Giving students a general overview of the whole field of Non-Western Christianity and introducing some of the major issues in the field . This course is compulsory for all students and runs throughout the first and second semesters. In addition, students must study a course in Research Methods.
* Optional Courses: Three optional courses must be taken each year. At least two of these must be post-graduate courses offered by the Centre for the Study of Christianity in the Non-Western World and other subject areas within the School of Divinity, one may be taken from the undergraduate offerings of the School. By agreement, students may take one optional course in another School.
Candidates will be assessed in each course taken for credit. The bases of assessment will often involve a major essay, but may comprise other measures. In any case, requirements of each course will be stated at the outset.
All coursework will be assessed by the end of April.
Candidates scoring an average of not less than 50% in their course-work, will proceed to the MTh. Those scoring less than 50% will proceed to the Diploma.
Dissertation
Candidates for the MTh are required to write a dissertation of approximately 15,000 words on an approved research topic. Candidates for the Diploma will write an extended essay of not more than 10,000 words.
Dissertations and extended essays are submitted by the end of August. All written work is assessed, and grades adjudicated, by internal and external examiners.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testStudents should usually have a good first degree in an appropriate field. Exceptionally, a student may be admitted on the basis of relevant professional experience, provided they show evidence of academic ability.
