The aim of this programme is to prepare the student for a professional career by providing in-depth knowledge in biomedical engineering:
* to meet the increasing demand for efficient health care systems in the medical and hospital sector as well as developing products for the biomedical industry
* to meet the increasing demand in other industrial and community sectors in need of biomedical expertise to develop new and improved consumer products for a sustainable society.
During the first year, the programme provides the students with a general interdisciplinary base of medical and biomedical qualified engineering skills. The general skills are then extended in the application-oriented specialisations in the second year.
Who should apply
The programme is suitable for students with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Automation and Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Engineering Mathematics and Bioengineering.
Why apply
The programme leads to a wide range of career opportunities with emphasis on health care providers (biomedical engineering divisions at hospitals), the biomedical industry and other industrial sectors for consumer products where biomedical aspects are of importance. You will gain general engineering skills at a level that is competitive within many branches of industry – the generality of the methods provides a great deal of choice in terms of different application domains.
Career
The programme leads to a wide range of career opportunities with emphasis on health care providers, the biomedical industry and other industrial sectors for consumer products where biomedical aspects are of importance.
Care has been taken to ensure that students gain general engineering skills at a level that is competitive within virtually any branch of industry. In addition, other career opportunities exist, for example professions such as academic researchers, technical advisors, project managers and teachers at different levels.
Research connections
The Biomedical Programme is a good platform for advanced studies and research. The programme qualifies students for postgraduate studies. Students interested in research have the possibility of completing a 60 ECTS master’s thesis. Thanks to MedTech West, which was formed by Chalmers University of Technology, Region Västra Götaland and Sahlgrenska University, there is a potent research environment in the region.
The programme includes a compulsory segment, and an elective segment, which areorganised in specialisations or tracks. The specialisations are formed around research areas where Chalmers has a strong national and international position.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
