This degree aims to deepen and refine the capacity of students to reflect critically on their thinking and practice.
It provides opportunities for students who wish to study education as an ethical, intellectual and cultural process, as well as those who may be concerned to reflect in a critical and contextualised (but not necessarily applied) way on their own professional development.
The programme examines education through:
* social and philosophical reflection and debate;
* in-depth policy analysis;
* systematic application of research evidence to the process of learning and teaching;
* the development of international and comparative perspectives on education and training;
* critical analysis of dominant discourses within the academic and policy communities.
The programme consists of the following compulsory and optional courses.
Required courses * Ethics and Education: The Normative Dimensions of Education
* Education Policy and the Politics of Education
Research Methods 1, 2 and 3 (each 10 credits)
These are three half courses which are required to be successfully completed.

* Child and Adolescent Development
* Curriculum: Context, Change and Development
* Developmental Disabilities: A Psychological Approach
* Education and Training Systems of the UK
* Educational Planning and Administration
* International Perspectives on Education and Training
* Learners, Learning and Teaching
* Philosophical Foundations of Educational Theory, Policy and Practice
* Gifted and Talented
Other option areas:
* Courses from MSc Educational Research
* Courses from MSc Graduate School Social Political Science programmes
* Courses from MSc programmes within The Moray House School of Education
Please note: Not all optional courses run every year. If there are fewer than ten students, a course will not be delivered.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testApplicants should normally have at least an upper second class honours degree, or its equivalent, in a relevant discipline. Those whose employment or other educational experience provides evidence of intellectual ability of an equivalent standard are also encouraged to apply.
English Language Requirement: Moray House School of Education require the following:
* IELTS Overall 6.5 at least 6 in all sections
* TOEFL Overall 580 at least 4.0 in the Test of Written English
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences will also accept:
* University of Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English - Grade B or above
* University of Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English - Grade A
