Burgas Free University /BFU/ is a modern educational institution established with an act of the Great National Assembly on 18 September 1991. It is one of the first non-state universities in Bulgaria, established in the biggest industrial and cultural centre in the south-eastern region of the country.

There are 4 Faculties: Faculty of Legal Studies, Faculty of Business Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering. BFU provides training of more than 7000 students /full-time and part-time/ in 12 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in Law, Public Administration, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Business Administration, Public Relations, Journalism, Social Work, Computer Science, Computer Systems and Technologies, Business Communication and Computer Systems. The graduates of BFU are over 12000.

Burgas Free University is a member of the European University Association, the Association of the Non-state Universities in Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Rectors’ Conference. In 1998 an agrrement was signed between UNESCO and Bourgas Free University for the establishment of the UNESCO Chair on Human Rights and Culture of Peace at the Univeristy. Since then it has been working actively in the field of human rights, democracy, tolerance, peace, civic education and culture.

In 2005 BFU was certified under ISO 9001:2000 and in 2010 BFU was certified under ISO 9001:2008.

In 2001 Burgas Free University was accredited by the National Agency of Evaluation and Accreditation with a Certificate No13/13.09.2001. In 2006 BFU passed through the second accreditation procedure and was accredited for the maximum period of 6 years.

In November 2004 BFU moved to its new premises. The new university campus is located in the city centre on an area of 22 000 m2. There are a total of 43 lecture halls, 3 language laboratories, 24 specialised laboratories, 6 computer classes, 6 specialised studies. A big polyfunctional conference centre is designed with an aula with 400 seats, a hall with 250 seats for audio-visual sound recording and simultaneous translations, and 2 conferece halls with 60 seats each. The centre is used for study purposes, as well as for conducting conferences, congresses, seminars, performances, spectacles, etc. The university library occupies an area of 1500 m2 on 2 floors, with several computerized reading rooms with full access to Internet. There is also a big service centre for the free time of the students and their entertainment. It includes a sports and medical centre, 3 cafes, 1 night culb, book shops, copy centres, bank service spots, parking lots. A modern radio studio is established and equipped, as well as a TV studio. In 2004 the building won the special prize “Building of the Year” and the architecht Ms. Lyudmila Kysoeva – author of the design project, became “Architect of the Year”.

BFU promotes professional collaboration and maintains good contacts with more than eighty universities all over Europe and the world. Burgas Free University has signed Agreements and Protocols for international cooperation with 21 universities and educational institutions in Europe and Africa, aiming at developing academic relations and long-term cooperation in the field of higher education, exchange of academic staff, student exchange and support of research. The University is working under the programmes Tempus; Lifelong Learning Programme – Erasmus, Grundtvig, Leonardo Da Vinci, Comenius; Transborder Cooperation; Operational Programmes.
