University Library
The University Library comprises the David Wilson Library based on the main campus and the specialist Clinical Sciences Library at the University Hospital.
The David Wilson Library combines state-of-the-art technology with the strengths of a traditional library. With over 1500 study spaces, a Student Development Zone, bookshop and café, the library is well-equipped to meet your study needs.
The Graduate School Reading Room within the Library is for the exclusive use of postgraduates and staff with a variety of study spaces and bookable group study rooms. A PC Zone is reserved for postgraduates and Wi-Fi is available throughout the Library.
Leicester also has a large volume of material available online with subscriptions to over 18,000 electronic journals and an increasing number of electronic books. Many of these resources are also available via Blackboard, the University’s Virtual Learning Environment.
Blackboard is accessible from anywhere in the world and is a valuable asset for students who wish to collaborate with their colleagues using the online discussion boards and forums. Other resources for distance learning and part-time research postgraduates include postal loans for books and arranging access to your local library.
There are Information Librarians for each subject area who are contactable by email, phone or in person and can provide extra support during your dissertation or thesis.
Computing Facilities
We have around 1,400 computers in use at the University, including those in the dedicated PC Zone in the Library. Access to some computers is available 24 hours and at weekends, meaning you can study at a time to suit you.

If you have your own laptop you can connect to the wireless network service from one of the many hotspots available on campus. The wireless network provides you with access to a number of web-based services, including your University email.

Academic and skills support
The University offers a range of facilities to help you achieve success in your programme of study and make the most of your time at Leicester. For most courses you will be assigned a personal tutor who has a pastoral role and can offer support and advice. You can also consult your course director, research supervisor or postgraduate tutor at any stage during your studies.
Student Development, based in the David Wilson Library provides opportunities for the development of higher level learning skills appropriate to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Study guidance is available as and when you need it and takes the form of workshops, written skills guides, training and informal advice.
Assistance with dyslexia or disability
The AccessAbility Centre supports all students at the University if they have dyslexia, another specific learning difficulty, a disability or a long term condition. You need to tell the University about your situation as soon as possible, ideally when you apply, so that you can be alerted to appropriate facilities and services.
The AccessAbility Centre also offers:

Learning a new language
At Leicester we offer a programme of language learning opportunities for campus-based students, with classes from beginners’ level upwards offered in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Polish and Dutch.
In addition to the support from the AccessAbility Centre, every department has an AccessAbility Tutor and all staff work supportively with disabled students.
UK students are encouraged to apply for Disabled Students’ Allowance as soon as their place is confirmed on the course. For further information on the Allowance please contact the AccessAbility Centre or your funding body.
Health and Wellbeing The University ensures that there is a range of quality services available to maintain and develop your health and wellbeing whilst studying with us, courtesy of the Student Support and Development Service. The opportunities for development are many and varied.

The Students’ Union Run by students for students the Students’ Union is here to represent, support and entertain you. All students can become a member of Leicester’s Students’ Union and with around 100 different societies, you can participate in a wide range of activities, from dancing to community volunteering. Many students also choose to contribute to our student newspaper, radio station, TV channel and website. A comprehensive representative system includes student representatives in departments, ensuring that students’ voices are heard.
Arts and culture As the University of Leicester's arts centre, Embrace Arts aims to offer opportunities to participate without barriers in ways that challenge and inspire. People can engage with the arts as audiences, performers and learners. The centre holds professional evening performances and lunchtime soundbites, provides music practice facilities and can provide instrumental and vocal tuition.
Music
O2 Academy Leicester
Opened in September 2010 as part of the complete refurbishment of the Percy Gee Building (the Students' Union), O2 Academy Leicester consists of three venues with capacities of 1,450, 500 and 250. Artists performing in just the first term included Professor Green, Plan B, The Magic Numbers and Corinne Bailey Rae.
Philharmonia Orchestra
The Philharmonia Orchestra, one of the world’s great orchestras, has an established partnership with the University of Leicester. Alongside its residency at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall (London) and its international touring programme, the Orchestra holds a residency at De Montfort Hall Leicester, performing nine concerts per year featuring a distinguished line-up of top international conductors and soloists.
This partnership with the University of Leicester offers students the opportunity to study instruments with the Philharmonia’s musicians, many of whom teach at the leading European conservatoires. Philharmonia players also lead workshops, classes and sectional rehearsals involving the University’s many Music Societies and all University of Leicester students qualify for a discount ticket scheme to attend the Philharmonia Orchestra’s concerts at De Montfort Hall.
Sport and leisure
With more than 30 sports clubs welcoming students at any level, and a range of sport, health and fitness facilities, you will have plenty of opportunities to try out new pursuits or develop your current interests. As well as being very successful at more traditional sports such as football, rugby and hockey, we also have rapidly growing sports clubs in less traditional fields such as snowboarding, surfing and Tae Kwon-Do.
Our sports facilities include pitches for football, rugby, cricket and lacrosse along with a floodlit all-weather pitch, five a side pitch, nine tennis courts, an athletics track, two sports halls, a weights room, two health and fitness clubs and squash courts.
