Institution Info

University of Economics - then the College of Social and Economic Sciences - was opened to students on January 11, 1937 when first lectures at the Faculty of Industrial Organisation took place. The first Rector of the University was Dr. Józef Lisak. Not long after the foundation of the University, the World War II began and the school was closed between September 1939 and February 1945.

After the war, the number of students increased very quickly and the University authorities decided to move both the academic and administrative sections from the ´Slaskie Techniczne Zaklady Naukowe (Silesian School of Technology) buildings to the old city hall in Katowice-Zawodzie (Rector's Office) and Building A at Bogucicka street. The academic year 1946/1947 was inaugurated in the new buildings.

In 1950 the Polish government decided to standardize economic education in the whole country. At that time, the name of the University was changed to State College of Economic Administration. In 1972, to mark its 35th anniversary, the University was given the name of Karol Adamiecki and two years later the school gained its present name.

Latest changes include modernization of the old buildings, as well as the opening of new didactic-accommodation facilities. The organization of the University has also undergone some changes related to the growing number of faculties and specializations, such as the foundation of the Faculty of Finance and Insurance in 2002 and the Faculty of Informatics and Communication in 2009.

By the decision of the Polish Parliament, since 1st October 2010 the name of our institution in Polish changes from "Akademia Ekonomiczna im. Karola Adamieckiego w Katowicach" to "Uniwersytet Ekonomiczny w Katowicach". This remarkable transformation confirms our place among the most prestigious higher education institutions in Poland.

Renting a flat

If you don’t feel like living in the student residential area you can always rent a flat on your own with a real estate agency (biuro nieruchomo´sci). The rent depends on the apartment location and usually varies from 150 to 200 EUR for a one-room apartment. You can also rent a flat with other students or share a room – that will probably be much cheaper.
Note that fully equipped flats are usually more expensive.

Tutor programme:

The Buddy (tutor) programme is one of the key activities of the Katowice Erasmus Student Network section. The Buddy is a Polish student who will help the international student get around at the University and in everyday life. Practical help varies from filling in registration forms, buying books, providing useful information to having a drink in the local student pub.

The tutor’s main tasks include:

* contacting the incoming student before his/her arrival
* picking up the student from airport, railway or bus station
* participating in the Integration Week organized by ESN
* providing any kind of help needed by the international student

Tandem:

Face-to-face meetings

Tandem is a system of learning foreign languages with a partner (other student) during individual meetings. The programme is free of charge and that’s what makes it different from traditional private lessons.
The form, place & frequency of meetings depend on your own preferences
No experience is required – these are not professional classes. Tandem should be a pleasure for both partners and an easy way of gaining knowledge about another country, not from books though but from a friend

Language evenings

The idea is to create space for foreigners living in a certain city to meet up with the locals. We will create language groups: French Table, Italian Table, Spanish Table etc., so you can choose the language of conversation and the topic you want to discuss. What is more, you can make friends who can later become your partners in Tandem. Feel free to join!!!

ESN:

ESN International, consists of 60,000 internationally-minded students of different higher educational institutions in countries across Europe. The aim of ESN is to promote the social and personal integration of exchange students. ESN at Karol Adamiecki University of Economics works in direct contact with the International Relations Office, taking care of exchange students so they can find their way in the new environment easier and they can spend their time in the best way possible to make the most of their stay in Poland. The organization sets up the social programme with lots of trips, meetings and parties so not only can our exchange students get to know our University and the city, but they can visit other places in Poland and learn something about our history, culture and tradition as well.

Medical care:

EU/EEA students

EU/EEA citizens Should the need to provide medical care arise, a student from a member country staying temporarily in the territory of Poland is entitled to free health care on the basis of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

The student is obliged to present the card (it is advisable to have also a copy) together with an identity document directly to the health care provider. The student will receive free health services from health care providers who have concluded a relevant contract with the NFZ (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia – National Health Fund), the institution responsible for assuring health services for insured persons and members of their families in Poland. Facilities of these health care providers are marked with the NFZ logo:

Without the EHIC and an ID, the patient will be obliged to cover the costs of treatment by him/herself; the same applies to services provided by health care units which do not have contracts with the NFZ.

To consult a specialist, you need a referral from a physician with an NFZ contract. No referral is required to the following specialists: obstetrician, dentist, dermatologist, gynaecologist, oncologist, eye specialist, psychiatrist. Also in case of a sudden illness, accident, injury, intoxication or life threat a you will receive necessary medical treatment without a referral.

If you needed hospital treatment, a doctor’s referral would be required. A patient who presents a European Health Insurance Card receives free hospital treatment within the health care system.

Apart from the academic and public medical care system, there is also a well-developed private sector. The costs of medical care may be reimbursed if you have purchased a health insurance policy in your country before departure. A database of English-speaking doctors is available at our Admissions Office.

Non-EU/EEA students

The students from non-EU/EEA countries should purchase health insurance in their home countries before departure. In case of the ISIC or Euro<26 cards, health care is covered by the insurance and you do not need to buy another policy unless you want to increase its scope or value. Erasmus students, on presenting the so-called legitymacja studencka – student card – issued by the host university, are usually allowed to consult doctors at academic medical care centres. However, according to state health regulations, foreigners (except the EU/EEA citizens, see above) have to pay for medical consultation. The cost is then reimbursed by the health insurance company. Apart from the academic and public medical care system, there is also a well-developed private sector. More information is provided on the NFZ website.

Non-EU students and EU students who do not have health insurance in their home country

Non-EU students and EU students who do not have health insurance in their home country may sign an insurance agreement with the Polish National Health Fund (NFZ-Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia) and take out the insurance for the monthly fee of PLN37.80 (approx. EUR10). EU citizens must present the E104 form issued in the home country, certifying that the person concerned is not insured there and stating when the last insurance period had finished. Both EU and non-EU citizens must present:

* certification from a Polish Higher Education Institution (HEI) confirming their status of a student or PhD student
* student / PhD student ID
* passport or – EU citizens only – other ID card
* registration of residence, issued by the Office for Civil Affairs (Wydzial Spraw Obywatelskich, ul. Mly´nska 4) of the Katowice district or – if the student stays at the university dormitory – certification from the Polish Higher Education Institution
* in case of the stay exceeding 3 months – PESEL (Polish Personal Identification number) issued by the Office for Administration and Civil Affairs (as above).

Accreditation

The high quality of teaching in the University of Economics in Katowice study programmes, both on bachelor and master level, has been confirmed by accreditation certificates awarded by the Accreditation Committee of the Foundation for the Promotion and Accreditation of Economic Education in Warsaw. The following study programmes have been awarded quality of education certificates: Management and Marketing, Informatics and Econometrics, Economics, Finance and Banking. Moreover, Management and Marketing has been awarded a quality of education certificate by the State Accreditation Committee.

Academic accreditation is the most important method of evaluating the quality of teaching at institutions of higher education. The purpose of the accreditation process is to confirm that the university meets certain quality of education standards and criteria, and to carry out an evaluation procedure, whose results will serve to improve the quality.

During accreditation, the university's mission and the results of its implementation are assessed, including the study programme, teaching process organization, studying conditions (didactic and social facilities, library, IT facilities), teaching staff's qualifications and their academic research, concern for the graduates' careers etc. The accreditation procedure comprises two elements: self-evaluation carried out by the interested institution itself and the assessment given by the visiting expert team, appointed by the Foundation for the Promotion and Accreditation of Economic Education.

Peer accreditation is initiated by universities vitally interested in evaluating and improving the quality of education, and is the manifestation of concern for the quality of teaching. The accreditation is voluntary and allows for determining study programmes of outstanding quality. The information about a university's accreditation is also helpful in choosing a school which provides the knowledge and develops the skills and attitudes that professionals need. In future, employers will be seeking graduates of schools that have taken the challenge of quality evaluation and obtained a certificate.

Study accreditation in Poland

The State Accreditation Committee was formed in January 2002 by the Ministry of National Education and Sport and it carries out obligatory evaluation of all study programmes offered by institutions of higher education in Poland.
