United Kingdom - Oxford Local Name: Oxford Brookes University
Oxford Brookes University is the only UK modern university to have achieved 24 subjects rated as excellent for teaching. We have a longstanding reputation for employability, and are host to two national centres of excellence in teaching and learning.
The University can trace its history back as far as 1865 with the foundation of the Oxford School of Art, which over the centuries merged and grew to become today's university. It was in 1992 that the then Oxford Polytechnic became Oxford Brookes University, naming itself after John Henry Brookes, first Principal of the Schools of Technology, Art and Commerce.
For the last seven years, Brookes has been named leading modern university by the Sunday Times University Guide. In 2007 the guide praised 'strong teaching that no other modern university and few older universities can rival'.
The Sunday Times´ University Guide is one of the most respected league tables and looks at the performance of universities across the UK in fields like teaching, research, student satisfaction and graduate employment prospects.
In the latest guide Oxford Brookes recorded strong student satisfaction ratings and in graduate employment was rated 32 out of 124 for starting salaries - ahead of several of the older "Russell Group" universities.
The Sunday Times says: "Graduates´ starting salaries are £900 higher than the average and more than two-thirds go into graduate-level jobs."
The University was also singled out for its sporting performance and in the Sporting Roll of Honour Oxford Brookes was named as the champion for men´s rowing.
