Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS)

You are entitled to health care at the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) if you are a member of AUS. Finnish Student Health Service, FSHS, provides students with preventive health care, medical care, mental health care and dental health care for free of charge or at a very low cost. FSHS covers all university students in 16 Finnish cities and services are produced at 17 health centers, four of which are located in Helsinki region.

As the services are available on weekdays during office hours only and FHSH does not provide any hospital or emergency services, you also need to have insurance. When coming in for appointment, the students need to provide a student card or other evidence of the payment of the Student Union fee.

School Psychologists and Pastors

Psychologist will give guidance on tasks that involve problem-solving like how to map the targets of your studies, how to get back to the studies after a longer break, how to learn the right study techniques, how one could adapt oneself smoothly in the study environment, how to solve the problems concerning motivation, anxiety about examinations and thesis writing, how to learn to manage the time effectively and how to overcome the difficulties of writing processes.

If you are in need of confidential discussion you can also contact school pastors of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. They will listen and talk to you regardless of your religious views. Consultation is available at campuses by appointment or at set times.

Please note that in cases of mental or physical illnesses the primary place to get help is the Finnish Student Health Service, FSHS.

Student Life

Finland has a rich history of student activities and involvement within universities and Aalto University is no exception.

By law, all universities must have one student union, and the student union representing students at Aalto is the Aalto Students’ Union (AUS). Every student automatically joins the student union of their respective school as payment of the annual fee is obligatory. Exchange students and other short-term students can also join the student union if their stay lasts longer than three 3 months, but membership is not obligatory for them. Yet it is recommended to join the AUS, as it provides a vast array of services, including housing and social activities.

There are also more subject-specific student organizations called guilds where students can get involved. A complete list of guilds can be found here (LINK). There are also clubs for international students to support their transition in coming to study at Aalto. It is also possible to have a Finnish ‘tutor’, who can help you adjust and prepare for life in Finland. Tutors are also arranged by the student union.
