Institution Info

When Duke Ludwig the Wealthy of Bavaria-Landshut founded Bavaria's first university with a papal concession in 1472, no one could imagine that over the next five hundred years it would move twice and emerge as one of the largest universities in Germany, providing some of the country's strongest research. The university began with four faculties in Ingolstadt, where it witnessed the flowering of German humanism and played a major role in the Counter-Reformation. The move to Landshut saw the growing influence of the Enlightenment on the university. The second move, this time to the heart of the royal capital Munich, brought an expansion of the faculties and a huge advance in the sciences. Today LMU Munich has matured into one of the world’s leading international universities, fully competitive with the other major institutions of higher learning and research. It continues to build on its distinct identity and its core skills in research and instruction in order to confront both academic challenges and the hugely complex demands of our changing world.

Student Life

Life in a new country is always challenging and, coming from another country, your first steps at a foreign university can be wobbly. To make your first steps in Munich easier, we have prepared information on how to find accommodation, which legal requirements need to be taken into account, how to explore the city by public transportation and so on.

Housing

Housing in Munich is both hard to find and more expensive than anywhere else in Germany.

But: the situation is not hopeless. Housing is arranged for LMU exchange students from selected partner universities. For all others some subsidized student housing is available. For private housing the city offers a variety of solutions, from student co-ops to rooms in homes

Legal requirements

Students living in Munich will have to do their registration and residence permits at the municipal administration authority, called the Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR). If you don't live in Munich, go to your local administrative department (Gemeindeverwaltung).

Public transportation

The Münchner Verkehrsverbund, Munich’s public transportation authority, offers an extensive and very reliable public transportation network of buses, trams, subways (U-Bahn) and suburban trains (S-Bahn). The inner-city part is called the MVG. You will find complete details in multiple languages on connections, prices, timetables, route planning and everything else on their website.

Students at LMU Munich can apply for a discount weekly or monthly pass. Costs depend on how many transportation zones you’ll be using regularly.Banking

After you have found housing or at least a temporary local address, the next thing to do is open a bank account. This is crucial because large payments in Germany are usually by bank transfer, called an überweisung, not check (cheque) or cash. You need the account early on to transfer your first rent payment, your security deposit (kaution) and your Studentenwerkbeitrag (student services fee) to register or re-register.

Working

Thinking of getting a job to top up your bank account or prepare for the future? Be aware that German law is very clear on the point of student and foreign labor. The main reason is to keep you from getting distracted from your studies. We offer only a brief sketch of all this. If you have any more questions we strongly recommend you check the information on the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) site and consult the Ausländerbehörde at the Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR).
