Student Life

Many Strathclyde students choose to live on campus in their first year because it's a great way to settle into life away from home and get to know other new students. It's also convenient for studying, comfortable, safe, affordable and fun.

In the heart of student life

Our residences are welcoming and sociable places to stay and study. There are almost 2,000 rooms on offer, all of them just minutes from the main university buildings, Students' Union, libraries and sports facilities - as well as the city centre, with all its shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, cinemas and other entertainment.

Student Village

The city centre John Anderson Campus contains a student village right in the heart of Glasgow. There's a free and frequent shuttle bus between John Anderson and Jordanhill campuses to help you get around quickly and easily.

We aim to make your life on campus as straightforward as possible. Everything you need to live comfortably and study easily is provided, so you can concentrate on your work and living student life to the full.

Accommodation & Dining

What will I eat?

All the flats in the John Anderson Campus Village are self-catering, with well-equipped shared kitchens. And there are lots of places to eat and drink on campus too. Enjoy a cappuccino while you log on to the Internet at the Java Café, or take a break from studying in the library and pop into The Orbit.

In touch

Every study bedroom offers network connectivity with access to the Internet, email and the University's learning and teaching resources. There is also a telephone in each room, which you can use to make free calls between residences.

What if I need help?

The team at the Village Office manage all our residences, help with repairs and offer a 24-hour emergency service. Find them on the ground floor of the Lord Todd complex in the John Anderson Campus Village.

Library

The University of Strathclyde has some of the best student libraries in Scotland - and that means they're among the best in the UK. There's a library on each campus and when you join us as a student, you will automatically be a member of both.

The Andersonian Library

Our main library in the Curran Building on the John Anderson campus has around 750,000 volumes and over 8,000 current journal subscriptions, the vast majority of which are available electronically. It covers all subjects taught at Strathclyde, focussing on science, engineering, business, law and social sciences. It offers 200 networked computers with access to the internet, email, a wide range of software and databases and a wireless area for laptops. The Andersonian Library is also responsible for the University's historical archives, including special collections of rare books.

The Jordanhill Library

Located on Faculty of Education campus, the Jordanhill Library in the Sir Henry Wood Building is the longest-established library in Scotland for resources in education, community and social work, speech and language therapy, music, sport and journalism.

Using the libraries

We'll give you an induction on using the library when you begin your student life. Your student ID card acts as your library card.

Sports & Recreation

If you enjoy sports, you'll be spoilt for choice at Strathclyde. Our Sports Union offers a wide range of facilities and team sports from football and rugby to athletics - and there's a huge range of sports clubs in and around Glasgow too.

The Centre for Sport & Recreation - John Anderson Campus

Based on John Street - across from the Students' Union - the CSR is a great place to enjoy sports and leisure activities such as volleyball, indoor cricket, trampolining, table tennis, resistance training, swimming and much more. Facilities include a large twin-court sports hall for all major indoor games, space for up to six badminton courts, an activities room, a weight training area and a cardiovascular fitness suite.

At Jordanhill

There's a games hall for indoor games, a gymnasium and a small cardiovascular unit. They're mainly for academic courses, but are available for leisure at other times.

Outdoor sports

At the Stepps playing fields you'll find seven grass football and rugby pitches, a floodlit sand-dressed artificial turf pitch, a blaize hockey pitch and an artificial cricket wicket. If you want to join a football, rugby or hockey team or find out about other competitive sports, get in touch with the Sports Union.

Spiritual Life

Student life can get hectic, so it's good to know that there are spiritual oases at Strathclyde. We welcome students from all over the world and there is a diverse mix of faith groups on campus. If you are seeking a spiritual life at university, this is the information you'll need.

Chaplaincy Centre

The Chaplaincy caters for all denominations through our full- and part-time Chaplains. You will always be welcome - whether you want to worship, seek advice, study in peace, have coffee, or just relax on the comfy sofas. Visit us on the top floor of the St Paul's Building, John Street.

International student?

Our International Students' Chaplain liaises with the different religious groups in Glasgow and can help you contact your own faith group. international.chaplain@strath.ac.uk

Health & Safety

We work hard to provide a safe and secure environment for our students, and have over 90 trained and dedicated security service staff on hand to provide help and support 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

24-hour security services

There are security patrols circulating on both campuses at all times, and for added peace of mind there is a monitored CCTV system beamed back to University Security Control. The Security Control Booth for the John Anderson Campus is in the Livingstone Tower; at Jordanhill it is in the David Stow Building.
