The origins of the University are in the Vilnius Evening Division of Kaunas Politechnical Institute (KPI) established in 1956. In 1960 the KPI Vilnius Evening Division was organised into the Vilnius Evening Faculty of KPI, and since 1961 became the Vilnius Branch of KPI; then in 1969 it was restructured into an independent higher school - the Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute (VISI). On October 31, 1990 by the decision of the Restoring Seimas the VISI became the Vilnius Technical University; and at last in 1996 it was named after Gediminas, Grand Duke of ancient Lithuania.
The mission of the University is to create, store and propagate scientific knowledge, latest technologies, cultural values, to teach and bring up members of the society, to cherish democracy and through such efforts to foster the economic growth of the country, competitive spirit in the economy, social welfare and peace as well as a high quality of life.
The University include faculties, departments (chairs), research and instructional laboratories, academic institutes and centers, a publishing house, administration and other subdivisions. On the recommendation of the Rector, the structure of the University is approved and changed by the Senate.
The destination and competence of the University`s subdivisions is determined by the regulations of subdivisions. At the University students of consecutive studies and listeners of non-consecutive studies study. The persons with the secondary-school education would be included in the first stage of consecutive studies or integral studies; the persons who have finished the first stage studies or other studies allowing, according to the legal acts in force, to enter the second stage of studies; and the persons who have finished the second-stage university studies - into the third-stage studies. The rules of admission is defined and announced by the Rector.

These activity groups include sports clubs and tourism club. The arts also thrive in this setting with extracurricular options such as chorus, theater, and dance. New members are welcomed into the groups each fall, supporting their essential role in the dynamic University community.
