Institution Info

The University of Southampton was originally the Hartley Institute, founded in 1862. In 1952 the Hartley Institute was granted a Royal Charter and became the University of Southampton. Today the University is a top UK research university, ranked 95th in the world – among only 17 UK universities to make the top 100 (The Times Higher Education Supplement World University Rankings 2009). The university is a member of the Russell Group of UK research intensive universities and of the Worldwide Universities Network.

The University has five campuses in Southampton and the School of Art in nearby Winchester. The main campus is just two miles from the city centre. The student population currently comprises over 22,000 students, including 1,400 students from the European Union and 3,400 international students from over 130 different countries.

Situated on England’s south coast, around one hour from central London and Heathrow Airport, and within easy reach of open countryside, the University enjoys an outstanding location. Major European cities are just a short flight from Southampton Airport.

The city offers a vibrant mix of recreation, culture and entertainment, from cinemas, theatres, concert halls and art galleries, to a wide variety of sporting facilities and one of the South coast’s top-10 shopping centres.

Student Life

Southampton is one of the safest cities in the UK in which to live, work and study, and we want to keep it that way.

The University is committed to being a good neighbour and working to ensure its impact on the local area is both enriching and beneficial. Our aim is to maximise the benefits of the University of Southampton to our neighbours and the local community and minimise any disruptions that come with having a university on your doorstep.

Our relationship with our local community is very important to us and we maintain close links with local residents' associations, community groups, the police and other agencies.

Campus sports facilities are available for use by our neighbours and we welcome visitors from all over the region to our campus arts venues – the Nuffield Theatre, John Hansard Gallery and Turner Sims concert hall – and bus travellers using our new uni-link bus interchange at Highfield.

We encourage our students to be good neighbours, asking them to be aware of their responsibilities as members of the community, not to let themselves down, and to avoid causing offence or impacting negatively on the lives of their fellow citizens.

Many of them make a significant personal contribution and commitment to the city through their volunteering work while at university, and many remain in Southampton after graduation to follow their careers and make their homes here.
