Services & Facilities

The main WHU building is known as the Marienburg, and the lecture halls are centrally located around a central square, the Burgplatz. This, together with the neighboring park, lends WHU the self-contained character provided by a real campus university. All the university buildings, the library, computer room, lecture halls, departments, cafeteria and administrative offices are within a short distance of one another. No more than a few offices are located in the immediate surrounding area.

A successful mix of new and old buildings gives the campus its unique charm. Staff and students can access all buildings with an identity card twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Students and staff enjoy optimum conditions for both study and work. The facilities and equipment provided by the school create an environment that promotes achievement and in which people can feel at home whether they are engaged in study, teaching, research or work.

The latest media technology in the lecture theaters, a well-equipped IT room, wireless LAN across the entire campus and a well-stocked library go without saying at WHU. This also includes the cafeteria, of course. WHU promotes private initiative and creativity among its students wherever and whenever possible. The theater group, for instance, has access to a fully equipped room, complete with stage and stage curtain, for both rehearsals and performances.

Student Life

Despite the demanding courses at WHU, other aspects of student life are certainly not forgotten. The students are involved in all sorts of activities. Diverse initiatives and projects, university sports and countless cultural activities offer reprieve from academic work and something for everyone. Those who are still not satisfied will find even more opportunities in the surrounding area or nearby cities such as Frankfurt, Cologne, Mainz and Wiesbaden.

SPORT

Sports enthusiasts in Vallendar can take advantage of the three tennis clubs with outdoor courts, an indoor tennis court, the local canoe club, a mini-golf course, an angling club, a soccer field, equestrian stabling facilities and an almost Olympic-size swimming pool in beautiful surroundings. Just a few kilometers away in Höhr-Grenzhausen, are squash courts and a riding school. The sports program offered by WHU includes all courses at WHU Gym, soccer, basketball and volleyball. Students at WHU can also take part in courses offered by the Koblenz university sports program, which means that there are more than 20 different sports open to them. For golf fans, there are two 18-hole courses within easy reach (10 and 17 kilometers away), and another 18-hole course can be found at the Jakobsberger Hof Hotel near Boppard. A short, 6-hole course with a large driving range and practice area is located 12 kilometers away, at Ransbach-Baumbach. In winter, ski trips organized by the students offer the perfect complement to academic studies. In summer, the sense of community between students, assistants, professors and administrative staff acquires a new dimension through united participation in various marathons and golf tournaments. Each November, WHU students organize the international sports festival, "WHU Euromasters". Guests from other universities, including Bucerius Law School, ebs, WFI KU Eichstätt Ingolstadt, the Business Schools of Frankfurt, Koblenz, Witten-Herdecke, Münster, Stockholm, Norwich, Maastricht, Rotterdam, Bolzano, Bocconi, and Zurich, and EDHEC Lille-Nice compete over two days in the disciplines of soccer, volleyball, basketball, rowing, relay and cheerleading for the coveted trophies.

CULTURE

In addition to the manifold opportunities offered in nearby cities such as Frankfurt, Cologne, Mainz and Wiesbaden, Vallendar also boasts a cultural scene. The KIV– Kultur in Vallendar - initiative organizes a variety of events, including readings with bestselling authors and concerts. WHU’s “Gewölbekeller” regularly plays host to a jazz brunch event and the annual “multiculti” festival is well known beyond the town boundaries. The city theater in Koblenz offers operas, operettas and plays; the program at Konradhaus includes intimate productions of theater and ballet, and the Kulturfabrik presents high-quality arts on a smaller scale, such as cabaret and chanson evenings. And just off the B9 road to Koblenz, you'll find the nine-screen “Kinopolis” cinema experience. With rock concerts at the Lorelei and Nürburgring, as well as musical events at Ehrenbreitstein castle, the cultural offering is extremely diverse. In Koblenz, the so-called ‘fifth season’ is celebrated in style, and there are plenty of reasons to party in the city’s countless pubs, breweries and wine bars well before the massive parade kicks off on Rosenmontag (the day before Shrove Tuesday).

Celebrating and going out

WHU student parties are well known beyond the boundaries of Vallendar and Koblenz. And during the semester there is almost always something to celebrate - be it the induction of freshmen into student life, the welcome reception for exchange students, the closing ceremony for Euromasters, the international sports festival or the raucous farewell parties for exchange students. The so-called “fifth season“, or carnival, is celebrated in wild and extravagant style in the Rhineland. The WHU students can be seen with their own marching troupe at the Vallendar parade, in many of Koblenz’s trendy bars, not to mention in Cologne, where whole buses are hired to transport the WHU clowns safely to and fro. And while on the subject of Cologne, students can really take advantage of the program offered at the Köln Arena – top class sports, concerts, etc. It's never a problem finding a ride. The open-air concerts on the Lorelei are a particular attraction, and only around 30 minutes away from Vallendar by car.But at the latest in spring, people realize there's no need to tramp abroad, because the best is right on their doorstep. It’s now that students – and, according to reliable sources, not only the students – head for the Wüstenhof, just north of Vallendar. The Wüstenhof is the most beautiful beer garden in the entire Neuwieder Valley, with a stunning view across to Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein castle, fresh beer on tap and an excellent menu. Among insiders, it’s even known as “Lecture Theater 9½”. Right opposite the campus is the Korova Bar, on Vallendar's main shopping street. Besides its wide range of coffees, imaginative cocktails and delicious snacks, this establishment is particularly noteworthy because back in 2004, it was the brainchild of three WHU students, who have financed and run the place.

Accreditation

In 1998, WHU became the first German university to be accredited by the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS). The accreditation has been extended for another five years in March 2009. This recognition is granted as a sign of approval for international business schools. The University of Mannheim is the only other university in Germany that has also fulfilled the stringent requirements for EQUIS accreditation.

All WHU degree programs are government approved. As an important step in the approval process, the Bachelor, Master, MBA and Kellogg-WHU Executive MBA programs underwent the accreditation process of the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA) in September of 2005; the accreditation was granted the same month. FIBAA accreditation also includes recognition by the “Stiftung zur Akkreditierung von Studiengängen in Deutschland” (German accreditation body).
