Klaipeda University was established on the basis of decree Nr. 1 - 640, adopted by the Supreme Council (Constituent Parliament) of Lithuanian Republic on January 1, in 1991.
The University started its academic activities on September 1, in 1991. The University had three faculties: the Humanities and Natural Sciences, Marine Engineering and Pedagogy and about 3 000 students. The University was building up on the basis of faculties and subdivisions of higher schools, functioning then in Klaipeda.
Studies and Students
Klaipeda University offers a developed three level study system: 67 bachelor, 4 specialilized vocational, 48 master, 3 doctoral study programs.
Klaipeda University offers 16 degree programmes and 12 non–degree programmes and courses for international students.
Trends of scientific research, artistic and academic activity, which are not developed in other Lithuanian universities, remain dominant in Klaipeda University. They are:
* marine environment research and engineering of marine transport;
* hydrology and oceanography;
* port technologies and engineering;
* history and languages of Lesser Lithuana and Baltic region;
* ecological engineering;
* landscape architecture;
* underwater archaeology;
* recreation and tourism;
* care;
* social geography;
* jazz music;
* sporting dances and choreography;
* childhood pedagogy.
Students flock into different associations. Students’union (KUSS), the largest self - management organization of students, started its activity in 1994.
Students also have clubs of Economists, Historians, Political scientists, Recreation, Sport, Tourists, etc.

International Relations Office
International Relations Office was established in 1992. The Office is a subdivision of the University's administration which helps to implement the University's policy concerning it's relations with foreign higher education institutions and other academic institutions.
The main functions of the International Office:
* to initiate and implement University's foreign relations policy;
* to collect and disseminate information about international scientific and study programs among KU community;
* to collect and disseminate information about international conferences, workshops, and projects among KU community;
* to advise KU researchers and lecturers on preparation of applications for international projects;
* to search potential partners for co-operation under various international programs;
* to organize and administrate students‘ mobility under the EU and other international programs;
* to provide information/advise for KU outgoing and incoming students and researchers;
* to organize the University‘s important international events;
* to organize the reception of official foreign visitors to KU.
Lithuania lies in the “geometrical” centre of Europe. The geometrical “point” is in the eastern Lithuania, near the village of Bernotai, 25 km north of our Lithuanian capital – Vilnius. Due to this reason there was the Europe park established (Europos parkas ), which is one of the most visited sightseeing in Lithuania.
Lithuaniais the largest and southernmost of the Baltic countries. Lithuania has borders with Latvia in the north, Belarus in the east and south and Poland and Russian Federation in the south and southwest. Forest spread through almost 30 percent of the country, and rivers, streams and more than 3000 lakes shape the land in the “heart-like” picture. Country has five national and 30 regional parks, 98 km long coast of soft sand and it is known as an amber coast country due to precious amber that is washed onto shore for many centuries.
