As a West Saxon centre of industry and trade, and particularly as an important location in the automobile industry, Zwickau has enjoyed a long tradition as a home of technological education where highly qualified industrial specialists are produced.
The University of Applied Sciences of Zwickau continues this tradition in education and research and since 1992 has expanded to include locations in Reichenbach, Schneeberg and Markneukirchen. A modern university education i.e. practice-oriented teaching, steadily integrating research and development as well as technology transfer is offered by an experienced teaching staff and sophisticated technological equipment. The University currently offers a wide range of academic programs in the areas of engineering, economics and life quality along with a number of specializations, courses with integrated or additional vocational training and courses in continuing education.
Programs in the fields of engineering and economy include Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, Physical Technology/ Computer Sciences, Electrical Engineering and Economics in Zwickau as well as Textile and Leather Engineering in Reichenbach. The program contents reflect both the traditions in the field of the automobile industry in West Saxony and modern, innovative ideas and trends using the latest technology. The academic departments of Applied Arts in Schneeberg, Architecture in Reichenbach as well as Languages and Healthcare and Nursing Sciences in Zwickau establish the third profile of life quality at the University of Applied Sciences.
Newly arranged and well equipped lecture and seminar rooms, libraries, laboratories, studios and computer pools with advanced information and communication technologies provide the basis for both a modern academic and practical university training. This is particularly reflected by cooperative training programs and postgraduate courses for full-time and distance learning providing further training facilities for university graduates. As a modern practice-oriented institute of higher education, the University conducts applied research work with a high level of commitment. Research projects are carried out at the University itself, at the Innovation Centre of Automotive Engineering, or at the Research and Transfer Centre. As a result, indispensable scientific and technological services are offered for the region and beyond.
Special emphasis is placed on international cooperation within the framework of European programs, world-wide bilateral cooperation and participation in the organisation of the scope of the European university space. The University has established connections with a number of foreign universities and colleges in the fields of training and research. Hence, the University offers numerous opportunities to their students and graduates to take up studies abroad and to acquire international degrees such as Bachelor, Master or Dual Diploma.

Student Service
The Student Service of Chemnitz-Zwickau is a public welfare institution that is exclusively and directly active in a non-profit manner. It is intended to care for university students in financial,social and cultural fields.
The Student Service manages two refectories, several cafeterias,as well as the halls of residence. Furthermore, it is responsiblefor the educational assistance and promotion for universitystudents.
Halls of Residence
Altogether, approx. 900 dormitory places are available for students of the University. Accommodation is preferably provided insingle and double rooms. The current rent costs vary between 130 € and 190 € per month according to equipment and room size. Students may write a letter of application for a dormitory place.
Refectories and Cafeterias
The refectories and cafeterias offer both hot and cold meals as well as various kinds of beverages. Students may select from several lunch dishes.
Advisory Services
If required, social advisory service is provided, especially for socially weak, disabled, sick and pregnant persons, as well as, female students with a child.
The advisory center arranges, among other things, addresses and contacts to local authorities and offices and helps in filing applications
University Library
The University Library serves as a central institution for teaching, research and study, as well as, vocational and general extended education.
As a public scientific library, its function is to provide the region of West Saxony with information and literature.
The main library, which is a special library for natural sciences, technology and environment, is located in the town center of Zwickau at the Kornmarkt. After three years of construction the library was opened to public in July 1998.
It offers excellent conditions for the study: e.g. 126 reading places, 44 PC terminals, five carrels, a media center, a room for group working, CD-ROM investigation facilities.
The main inventory of the Library includes at the moment 198,000 textbooks, monographs, dictionaries, encyclopedias, periodical volumes, law gazettes, means of information, AV media and dissertations, as well as, 572 currently subscribed journals, 95,000 standards and 300,000 patents for a lot of disciplines.

Center of New Course Facilities
The Center of New Course Facilities is a central scientific institution of the University of Applied Sciences of Zwickau. It is intented to assist institutions and academic departments of the University in scientific analyses, as well as designing, planning, implementing, promoting and coordinating activities in the fields of new post-graduate subject areas and the application of new methods and techniques in training and further education.

Student Council
The Student Council is the official student organisation at the West Saxon University representing students internally and externally.

Student Clubs
University Sports
All students and members of the staff are invited to attend the university sports courses. The sports offers are announced at the
beginning of each term. In addition, special courses are offered within a given time. University sports have mainly mass sport
character.
Responsible for coaching of sports are the University Sports Center in cooperation with the authorised sports representative
of the Student Council.
The following kinds of sports are permanently offered:
