Construction of a dedicated embedded systems research centre (NIMBUS) was completed in early 2010, as was a substantial extension to the Rubicon. The NIMBUS Centre provides space for up to 80 researchers, including facilities for undergraduate project students, visiting postgraduate students and researchers from other institutions and dedicated industry visitor workstations, already in use, where company researchers can work in close collaboration with NIMBUS staff and use NIMBUS research facilities. NIMBUS is CIT's first dedicated research centre and is intended not only to be a showcase for CIT's research but also to demonstrate CIT's ability to translate innovative research into economic benefit. A new dedicated research building for the sciences, CREATE, is due to be completed shortly. The Bishopstown campus also has extensive sports facilities which are used both by the college and the surrounding communities.

The CIT Crawford College of Art & Design and the CIT Cork School of Music are situated in the city centre. The CIT Cork School of Music occupies a purpose-built facility of international repute on Union Quay which opened in September 2007.

The National Maritime College of Ireland opened in October 2004 in Ringaskiddy, a major ferry port and naval base in Cork harbour, about 16 km south-east of Cork city.
