Geoengineering relies on a wide range of disciplines including geo- and material sciences, mechanics and construction. Structures of interest include foundations, roads, escavations and underground structures like tunnels. The Geoengineering course is offered by Aalto University.

About

The Master’s Programme in Geoengineering at Aalto University gives you the knowledge, skills, and competences that are needed to understand the behaviour of soils for geotechnical engineering, of rocks for rock engineering and mining and of road structures for highway engineering. As a graduate of our programme, you will have a firm grasp of the entire life cycle of engineered structures. This covers the entire life cycle from research and design to construction, maintenance and recycling. Field investigations, laboratory experiments and numerical modelling are the tools a geoengineer relies on.

Specialisation
Geotechnical engineering

In geotechnical engineering, the main topics of interest are the mechanical, hydraulic and thermal properties of soil and their impact on foundations, soil-structure interaction and soil improvement. Sound geotechnical knowledge is the foundation of all construction.

Rock engineering

The core fields of rock engineering are rock mechanics, excavation techniques and applied geosciences. Rock engineering is about utilising bedrock as an underground space and as a mineral resource. The education gives you the tools required for designing optimal structures in the rock and expertise to carry out these plans in a safe, economic and most environmentally friendly way.

Highway engineering

Roads and trafficked areas are a crucial part of societal infrastructure and as such have a profound impact on everyday life and the entire function of the society. The focus areas in highway engineering are the structural design of roads and their structure, including bituminous materials.

Career prospects

Geoengineers have many opportunities to work in varying expert assignments. Graduates are mainly employed by industry, but also by government organisations and research institutions. They hold key positions ranging from research, teaching and consultancy to management, design and engineering. Typical job titles at the start of a career in geoengineering include project manager, designer and site supervisor. An academic position is also a possibility after completing a doctoral degree.

                English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

                • Minimum required score:

                  6.5

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

                • Minimum required score (Grade C):

                  180

The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.

                  580

The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). The writing part of this test is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. Read more about TOEFL (PBT).

                • Minimum required score:

                  92

The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).
