Programme Structure

Courses:
  • Advanced Vision (Provisional)

This builds on the introductory computer vision material taught in Introduction to Vision and Robotics, giving students a deep understanding of main concepts in imaging and machine vision by constructing several vision systems.

  • Social Shaping of Digital Research

This will provide a theoretical framework for understanding the functioning of the human infrastructure (e.g. technicians and scientific users) that is required to sustain digital research tools and methods.

  • Practical Introduction to Data Science

This is a practical introduction to data science from a computational perspective, giving a broad introduction across the field while also supplying hands-on skills in basic programming methods.

  • Practical Introduction to High Performance Computing

This covers all the fundamental concepts that underpin modern high performance computing allowing students to explore the concepts by running parallel programs on real HPC systems.

  • Engaging with Digital Research

This provides a route for those engaged in social and population based research to engage with new emerging models of professional practice in developing and deploying digital research methods and results.

  • The Use and Evolution of Digital Data Analysis and Collection Tools

This will address the opportunities and challenges of a range of traditional and emerging digital research approaches and techniques focusing on the relevance of their applications from a user perspective.

  • Understanding Data Visualisation

This provides students with skills to critically interpret the most popular data visualization techniques and examines the visual aspects of data analytics.

  • Introduction to Vision and Robotics (Provisional)

This provides a technical introduction to machine vision and imaging combined with robotic systems, thus covering the range of physical automation from sensing through to the control of robot movement.

  • Managing Digital Influence

This provides students with skills to assess all aspects of the performance of products and organizations based on customer feedback. The analysis will start from media ranking and progressively extend to automated ranking systems.

  • Technologies of Civic Participation

This explores current and potential uses of new data intensive systems by citizens and policy-makers in responding to mundane everyday threats to social resilience and appreciating how these activities are linked to everyday life in the community.

Academic Requirements

An undergraduate degree, with an excellent or very good classification (equivalent to first or upper second class honours in the UK).

Applications are submitted through the University’s online application service, EUCLID and we cannot make an offer of a place without a fully completed application. You do not have to complete the application in one session - you can save your progress and return to complete the form later. When uploading documents, please keep file sizes small to improve processing time and name all files appropriately. For example: Transcript, Reference 1, English Language Certificate.

You need to gather and upload the following supporting information, with English translations where applicable:

  • A degree certificate
  • If you are yet to graduate, a formal letter from your university can be uploaded in place of a degree certificate to secure a conditional offer
  • A transcript of your degree certificate, or an interim transcript if you are yet to graduate, which provides details of degree examinations passed and the marks and grades awarded
  • Two signed and dated letters of reference which are on headed paper
  • An English language certificate from within the last two years, if applicable
