The research program in mathematical sciences has a strong international reputation and collaborations between research groups and other universities offer interesting interdisciplinary challenges.

Description of Mathematics

Program's Objectives

The level and variety of subjects studied provide mathematicians with an excellent command of fundamental mathematical tools and abstract reasoning. The core subjects are analysis, algebra, geometry, topology and number theory. The Master of Science in Mathematics offers a high level of education, either in pure mathematics or in applied mathematics.

Being trained in the analysis, abstraction and reflection necessary to solve complex problems, graduates in mathematics are highly esteemed professionals. They will will be qualified for various careers in private
companies, governmental institutions or in academia.

This Master’s program also provides an excellent foundation for students planning to follow a PhD program in mathematics.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or an equivalent degree. Students from related backgrounds (physics, computer science, engineering, etc.) may also apply provided they are highly motivated and possess outstanding mathematical qualifications.

Course Content

Students must choose between the following two orientations:Fundamental mathematics
  • at least 30 credits in list A
  • at most 5 credits in list D
Applied mathematics
  • at least 30 credits in list B
  • at most 5 credits in list D
Recommended minors:
  • Management, Technology and Entrepreneurship
  • Area and Cultural Studies

Requirements for Mathematics

All documents and diplomas should be in English, French, German or Italian. Please join a legalized translation of all documents written in another language.
  • Your resumé (curriculum vitae)
  • Copy of your University degree(s) or Bachelor's degree. If you don't have your degree yet, you will bring it to the Registrar's Office upon registration at EPFL*.
  • Legalized transcripts from each university you have attended.
  • A statement of purpose. See hereunder for a more detailed explanation.
  • Three recommendations (except holders of any EPFL Bachelor's degree applying in another field than their original field and except for candidates from another Swiss university applying to a Master in the same field of study as their Bachelor).
  • During the electronic application process, you will have to give the details of three referees, who will then be requested to produce recommendation letters for you directly to EPFL. See hereunder for a more detailed explanation.
  • Your identity card or passport.
For foreigners who already live in Switzerland: your residence permit.Extra documents such as TOEFL or GRE scores, research publications or other portfolios of your previous work, are welcome but not compulsory. We will only consider documents uploaded in your online application form. (No documents sent by postal mail).
