About

The programme will enable graduates to develop and implement creative solutions to the problems encountered in renewable energy capture, conversion, storage and management.

Students will gain the knowledge and skills to assess renewable energy resources, design appropriate renewable energy systems, evaluate the performance of these systems and assess the wider impacts of renewable energy development. The programme provides introductory courses to fundamental energy science and current energy issues, while the project-led courses focus on the design of renewable energy systems. The programme concludes with a research-led dissertation in the summer.

Renewable energy research focuses on six main areas:

The aims of the programme are to enable the students to:

  • develop detailed knowledge and critical understanding of the core skills in renewable energy resources, converters and systems
  • develop and use a significant range of principal and specialist skills, techniques and practices in renewable energy
  • be able to apply this knowledge directly to complex applications
  • critically review existing practice and develop original and creative solutions to problems within the domain
  • communicate and work effectively with peers and academic staff in a variety of tasks, demonstrating appropriate levels of autonomy and responsibility, and
  • plan and execute a significant project of research, investigation or development in a specialist area within the renewable energy arena, demonstrating extensive, detailed and critical understanding of that specialism.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score: 6.5

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.   • Minimum required score (Grade C): 180

    The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

    Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.

  • Minimum required score: 550

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).   • A first or second class honours degree in a suitable subject with a numerate background. Equivalent overseas qualifications will also be considered.

Funding

Scholarship Opportunity
Scottish Funding Council has made available 20 scholarships covering fees only to students with Scottish backgrounds. These will be spread over all our Energy based MSc programmes. There is no separate application process for this. If you are eligible, you will be considered automatically. You will be notified through the summer if you have been selected.
