EPFL is a leading center for mathematical education and research. It compromises three institutes and a research center devoted to the major areas of pure and applied Mathematics. The research program in mathematical sciences has a strong international reputation and collaborations between research groups and other universities offer interesting interdisciplinary challenges.

This program concentrates on learning advanced mathematical methods and applications of mathematics. The core subjects are analysis, applied probability and stochastic processes, statistics and data analysis, optimization and operations research, numerical analysis and scientific computing and financial mathematics. The students learn how to approach diverse modeling problems and gain hands-on experience in an industrial setting during the internship.

Graduates will be prepared for an attractive, diverse and growing job market. They will have a high level of competency in formulating and analyzing complex models and will learn how to extract relevant parameters, to simulate the system under consideration, make forecasts and to compare expected results with factual data. Recent graduates have found jobs in banks, engineering companies, the automobile industry, governmental offices, pharmaceutics, consulting companies and in the nutrition industry. The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics is also an excellent foundation for students planning to follow a PhD program in applied mathematics, financial mathematics or statistics.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score: 7

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

    Take IELTS test
  • Minimum required score: 600

The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). The writing part of this test is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. Read more about TOEFL (PBT).

  • Minimum required score: 100

The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Candidate must hold a Bachelor degree in mathematics by a recognized University with excellent results. Holder of a Physics Bachelor degree or field close to mathematics may also be accepted. It is also possible that a candidate is required to take extra courses from the Bachelor in mathematics.

All documents and diplomas should be in English, French, German or Italian. Please join a legalized translation of all documents written in another language.

  • Your resumé (curriculum vitae)
  • Copy of your University degree(s) or Bachelor's degree. If you don't have your degree yet, you will bring it to the Registrar's Office upon registration at EPFL*.
  • Legalized transcripts from each university you have attended.
  • A statement of purpose. See hereunder for a more detailed explanation.
  • Three recommendations (except holders of any EPFL Bachelor's degree applying in another field than their original field and except for candidates from another Swiss university applying to a Master in the same field of study as their Bachelor).
  • During the electronic application process, you will have to give the details of three referees, who will then be requested to produce recommendation letters for you directly to EPFL. See hereunder for a more detailed explanation.
  • Your identity card or passport.
  • For foreigners who already live in Switzerland: your residence permit.

Extra documents such as TOEFL or GRE scores, research publications or other portfolios of your previous work, are welcome but not compulsory. We will only consider documents uploaded in your online application form. (No documents sent by postal mail).
