The program is open to residents in Surgery at the University of Manitoba currently enrolled in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) specialty training program. The RCPSC program is a postgraduate clinical specialty certification program and residents earn the M.Sc. as an additional degree to their certification. 

About

The purpose of the program is to stimulate the involvement of surgical residents in research and to encourage them to develop a career as surgeon-scientists. Many recent M.Sc. recipients have gone on to careers in academic surgery or are undertaking fellowship training with plans to assume an academic career in Surgery.

Research facilities depend upon the chosen advisor. Such individuals are University of Manitoba faculty who have facilities located at Health Sciences Centre, University of Manitoba – Bannatyne Campus or St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre. The research interests of the Department reflect the diversity of the clinical specialties contained therein

In addition to the minimum course requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, students must:

  • complete twelve months’ work of research, under the direct supervision of the senior investigator or thesis advisor and the Research Chair for the Department of Surgery
  • submit a major thesis on the research project
  • defend their thesis for an examining committee, displaying adequate knowledge of the subject involved

  • Minimum required score: 6.5

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).   • Minimum required score: 86

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).
