The Master Programme in Crafts is aimed at students wishing to develop their artistic capacity within one of the specialisations Ceramic Art, Jewellery Art and Design and Textile Art. The Programme will be offered at Advanced Level at the School of Design and Crafts (HDK).
HDK has well-equipped workshops and practical artistic work is the starting point for studies. Each student will formulate and carry through an individual artistic project under the supervision of professors, lecturers and technicians.
Individual studio work will be combined with individual and group run-throughs, oral and written presentations, theoretical discussions and seminars to provide students with tools for analysing and contextualising their work. The whole Master´s group will participate in these activities together, as is also the case with course components intended to prepare students for their professional lives such as study trips, presentations of invited artists of current interest, etc. This is a system that aims to stimulate cooperation between students, and that will maintain the ongoing dialogue about aspects specific to each of these three artistic orientations and aspects common to all. Cooperation between the different orientations and also with external partners will contribute to sharpening the students awareness about their own enterprises and the roles they choose, artistically as well as in a social and ethical perspective. The focus of the individual artistic specialisation makes supervision discussions an important tool of instruction. It also implies freedom for the students to conceive and carry out artistic projects and in this manner to structure their own studies themselves. Independence and ability to take the initiative are thus essential, and the common elements in the programme are intended to act as support for individual work.
The language of tuition is English or Swedish depending on the needs of the students.
During the first year the student´s own work will be combined with creative course components as well as those components concerned with orientation towards and preparation for a professional career. The second year is more directed towards individual work with a Master´s project as its focus.
The Programme will be concluded with an examination project leading to a Degree of Master of Fine Arts in Crafts with specialization in Textile Art. The Master´s Programme prepares the student for a research career and for a qualified professional role. These studies offer practical and theoretical intensification of the student´s artistry as a base for a qualified artistic enterprise within this field and/or post-graduate research studies.
