About

Students will have the opportunity to specialize in areas of education which they find the most relevant and interesting. Students will acquire scientific expertise in the field of education and be able to work with theories and analyze and develop educational practices. The Master’s Degree in Educational Sciences offered by University of Jyväskylä creates a foundation for producing scientific knowledge and applying scientific methods in practice in the field of education. 

The programme prepares experts into various sectors of education in national and international contexts: educational planning, administration, consultancy, coordination, development, teaching and research.

Advanced studies in Education include studies, for example, in international education policies and practices, educational cultures, intercultural competence, comparative pedagogy, and professional identity and agency. 

The programme also offers a unique opportunity to get firsthand experience on Finnish Education System. Research studies consist of academic skills, research methods and master’s degree thesis. In addition, students choose specialization studies of their interest in early childhood education, guidance and counselling, pedagogical issues, special needs education, education/adult education or educational leadership.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score: 6.5

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score: 580

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). The writing part of this test is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. Read more about TOEFL (PBT).

  • Minimum required score: 92

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Bachelor’s degree (academic first cycle degree), relevant to the field of education, and completed with good grades. Admission of an applicant graduating after the application deadline is conditional till s/he submits the degree certificate. The degree must be completed by June 30, 2017 and the copy of the degree certificate and the transcript of records must reach JYU by July 17, 2017.
