The objective of the Master’s Degree Programme in Educational Sciences at University of Jyväskylä is to prepare highly competent and internationally oriented educators to raise the quality of education in the diversifying contexts of the globalized world. About

Students will have the opportunity to specialize in areas of education which they find the most relevant and interesting. Students will acquire scientific expertise in the field of education and be able to work with theories and analyze and develop educational practices. The Master’s Degree in Educational Sciences offered by University of Jyväskylä creates a foundation for producing scientific knowledge and applying scientific methods in practice in the field of education. The programme prepares experts into various sectors of education in national and international contexts: educational planning, administration, consultancy, coordination, development, teaching and research.

Advanced studies in Education include studies, for example, in international education policies and practices, educational cultures, intercultural competence, comparative pedagogy, and professional identity and agency. The programme also offers a unique opportunity to get firsthand experience on Finnish Education System. Research studies consist of academic skills, research methods and master’s degree thesis. In addition, students choose specialization studies of their interest in early childhood education, guidance and counselling, pedagogical issues, special needs education, education/adult education or educational leadership.

Academic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (academic first cycle degree), relevant to the field of education, and completed with good grades. Admission of an applicant graduating after the application deadline is conditional till s/he submits the degree certificate.
English language profiency
  • English language proficiency demonstrated in only one of the following ways:
  • Upper secondary school degree, English being the medium of instruction, from the following countries: Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Great Britain, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.
  • Bachelor’s Degree, English being the medium of instruction, from the following countries: EU/EEA country, the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. The degree must be fully completed in English and the thesis must be written in English. The language of instruction must be clearly marked in the degree certificate or transcript of records, or other official document provided by the higher education institution in question.
  • a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 580 (paper-based) or 92 (internet-based)
  • an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.5
  • a Cambridge ESOL’s Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) or Cambridge ESOL’s Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) grade C or above
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English) 59
  • National Certificate of Language Proficiency (YKI) for English with skill level 4 or higher (in each section)
Entrance examination and aptitude test
  • Phase I: Assessment of eligible applicants based on the application documents
  • Phase II: Interviews and final student selection. Invitations to the interview will be sent via email by February 24, 2017. The interviews will be conducted between March 1-7, 2017.

Tuition Fee Per Full Programme

  • EUR 10000 International

Tuition fees will be introduced only for non-EU/EEA students in Finland from August 2017 onwards. The fees will concern non-EU/EEA degree students who start their studies in English-taught Master's degree programmes in August 2017 or after that at the University of Jyväskylä.
