The Design department of Domus Academy arises from the awareness that today the design world needs more complex design solutions, able to integrate different disciplines and particular research perspectives, in order to properly answer to the current vision of the global and delocalized production world. Designing, producing, promoting and marketing a product or a service in the post-industrial society of information, requires designers with very specific skills, able to dialogue with different players and to handle the market following non-conventional rules. The Course
The automotive scenario is changing, as the vision of a car as an object of desire, representing a lifestyle, a concentration of performance and beauty. Today, car design has to face the challenges represented by traffic, the changing urban scenarios all over the world, environmental concerns in the public opinion, increasing attention to safety of passengers and people, the effects of the global financial crisis and the issue of fuel costs.
Domus Academys Master Program in Car Design is part of the design logic of an increasing functional relation between mobility and territory, facing the complexity of developing vehicles suited to new needs. Automotive companies need a new generation of car designers, capable to integrate tradition with changing and diverse market requirements and new technological developments.
The Master in Car Design aims at updating and developing professional competencies of young, promising designers. It benefits from Italian car design tradition, and it pursues an integrated design approach, where means of transportation are built respecting ergonomics, safety, without forgetting the environmental impact, and taking into a very serious account aesthetics.
The students attending the Domus Academys Master course in Car Design are going to become professionals in the automotive sector, acquire different and multiple skills, thanks to the multidisciplinary approach of the school. Technical and managerial competences are in fact at the basis of this course, to allow the students to gain a global vision and to confront with all the parties involved in the creation of the product.
The School own Career Service will help participants to establish contacts with a wide number of perspective employers, ranging from car manufacturers design department to leading design studio active in the automotive and transportation sectors, in Italy and abroad.
After this Master, students could expect to find employment opportunities primarily in the following role:
- Car Designer
- Designer
The Master in Car Design is based on the principle of learning by designing. In order to design it is not important what the theory describes as possible: the designer is interested in the potentials, those possibilities the theory does not eliminate. What is interesting is the method with which to direct the existing know-how towards an innovation vision.
The Master course in Car Design and Mobility lasts 12 months and is articulated into lectures, project seminars, workshops and a final Master thesis.
Workshops
Workshops are the backbone of Domus Academys unique learning approach. During workshops students work on different areas of project in collaboration with car designers and partner automotive companies. Every workshop includes lectures (cultural, methodological and technical), meeting with automotive sector experts, and a design project, developed with the supervision of experienced designers. Participants will receive a project brief, they will work under the guidance of a project leader and with the assistance of a tutor, individually or in a small design team. At the end of the workshops, a presentation of the projects results will be held, in some cases to a mixed team of faculty members and external experts.
Master Thesis
In the last months of the program, participants will work on a project that gathers all the competences developed during their studies, starting from a global vision and getting to the design of a detail. Participants to the Master in Car Design will be asked to choose a design theme to be developed, to give a sense to their project and to carry it out keeping an high level of research in all the steps of the design process. Project results will be prepared at an actual professional level, will be shown during the thesis dissertation and will enrich the students personal portfolio.
The program addresses students coming from specialized schools, or young designers and professionals working in the design field.
There is limited number of places on the course and participants will be selected on the basis of the documentation requested for admission.
