The Master Programme in Accounting and Financial Management at Uppsala University will give you the possibility to aquire these skills. In addition, you will gain the opportunity to immerse yourself in one of the specialisations offered within the programme. After completing the programme you have opportunities to work as an auditor, controller or finanacial manager. The programme also provides a good basis for PhD studies.

The programme is characterised by innovative thinking and progression besides being connected to the research profile at the Department of Business Studies.
The programme lasts for two years, with the opportunity to finish your studies after one year, and has three specialisations:

Accounting

In the specialisation Financial Accounting you will conduct studies related to both accounting and auditing. Problems are studied and analysed from both an accounting and legal perspective. This field of study is suitable for those who plan to work within the fields of, and or do research in, accounting and auditing.

With knowledge of accounting and auditing it is possible to work in both a national and international labour market. Both the private and the publicly funded sector offers interesting jobs in accounting and auditing.

Management Control

In the specialisation Management Control you will conduct studies of both the financial system and its organisational context. The specialisation provides insight into financial and operations management related to organisational control. This field of study is suitable for those who plan to work within, and or do research about, the Financial Management/controller area.

With knowledge of management control and organisational development it is possible to work as a controller in various positions such as marketing controller, business controller or project manager. Knowledge of the link between management control and organisational development is important to create business development.

Financial Management

In the specialisation Financial Management you will conduct studies including international corporate investment and financing issues. The specialisation prepares you for practical work and research related to the investment, valuation, accounting and control.

Knowledge from studies about financial management opens up opportunities to work with different tasks related to investments, business valuation, financial analysis etc. The content of the specialisation is broadly focused on preparing you for work in the banking and financial market.
Degree

The programme leads to a Master of Science (120 credits) in Business and Economics where Business Studies is the main field of study. If you choose to finish your studies after one year with a 15 credit thesis you will recieve a Master of Science (60 credits) in Business and Economics where Business Studies is the main field of study.

Programme Structure

Semester 1 and 2

During the first and second semester you take courses that are mandatory and common to all students and courses specific for the chosen specialisation. The common courses provide knowledge about business issues, accounting theory, scientific method, etc. Below you will find a more detailed description of each specialisation:

Financial Accounting

Studies in financial accounting are linked to accounting theory, auditing, financial decision making and also regulation in the financial sector. Some of the courses are carried out together with those studying the specialisation Financial Management. Guest lecturers with experience from accounting and auditing will participate in the courses given in this specialisation.

Management Control

Studies in management control are linked to controlling, financial management philosophies, leadership and change management within organisations. Some of the courses are carried out together with a specialisation within the Master Programme in Business and Management. Guest lecturers with experience from the financial area, i.e. controllers, will participate in the courses given in this specialisation.

Financial Management

Studies in financial management are connected to investments and financing, business valuation, regulation of financial markets. Some of the courses are carried out together with the specialisation Financial accounting. Guest lecturers with experience from the financial area, i.e. CFOs, will participate in the courses given in this specialisation.

Semester 3

The third semester is ”elective”, which means that you may either choose to take elective courses, join the international exchange programme and study abroad at one of our partner universities, or do an internship at a company or organisation.

Semester 4

In the fourth and last semester you will write a 30 credit Master's thesis where you will go more in-depth within a particular area of your specialisation.

Academic Requirements

For Master's level studies, applicants must have a Bachelor's degree from an internationally recognised university. Applicants who have not been awarded a Bachelor's degree but are in their final year of studies may be conditionally admitted.

Applicants must also demonstrate proficiency in English, and this is usually done through an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent.

  •  No tuition for citizens of European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) country, or Switzerland.

Funding

Uppsala University provides several different scholarships for students. The scholarships cover exclusively the tuition fees for courses within the programme, i e 30 credits per semester.
