The Master in Information and Computer Sciences is taught by faculty members from the Computer Science and Communications Research Unit. The University of Luxembourg's primary mission is to conduct fundamental and applied research in the area of computer, communication and information sciences. The goal is to push forward the scientific frontiers of these fields. Overall over 200 students pursue graduate and undergraduate degrees in Computer Science with individual supervision.

    This Master in Information and Computer Sciences from the University of Luxembourg is a continuation of the Bachelor studies as a first step towards the PhD. MICS starts with an orientation meeting where all new students get to know the professors and other students. The first semester is then mandatory for all: it is dedicated to the fundamentals of computer science. By the end of the first semester, the student selects courses based one or more profiles that he likes to pursue. Profiles are similar to specializations with the added benefit that multiple profiles can be realized. The following profiles are currently being offered:

  • Adaptive Computing ,
  • Communication Systems,
  • Information Security,
  • Intelligent Systems,
  • Network Systems,
  • and Reliable Software Systems.
  • The second and third semester offer specialised courses in the selected field, preparing the candidate for the final Master Thesis.

    The MICS adheres to the Bologna agreement.

    The students will acquire the necessary know-how for high-level research- and industry-oriented work. Currently we teach students from more than 10 different countries, we have national and international cooperation agreements with universities across Europe, US, and China, and the private sector. We are looking for students with a Bachelor or equivalent diploma degree in computer science or relevant field, with good mathematical knowledge and with the motivation to study in a research-oriented field. The MICS is completely taught in English. There will be no entry examination since the first semester acts as orientation semester where the student has to demonstrate his/her competences. The eligibility of both Bachelor/Diploma degrees in other related fields and other degrees are to be decided individually by the director of studies of the Master program.

Further Requirements

The following requirements have to be met to be able to successfully complete the studies.

  • Language: The students must be able to read English with ease and to understand spoken English in lectures and group discussions. The student has to show
    • Listening Comprehension: the ability to understand spoken English.
    • Reading Comprehension: to read and understand both technical and non-technical material.
    • Writing skills: to write standard written English.
    • Fluency in speaking.
  • Academic Background
    • The student needs to have a basic education in computer science as given in a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. This includes e.g.:
      • mathematical foundations as given in (Linear) Algebra, Analysis, etc.
      • good programming skills in at least one programming language
      • comprehension of abstract subjects
      • basic understanding of computer science
    • There is no need for work experience, but it can become a plus for a student to share industrial experiences.
