The program combines the disciplines of informatics, mathematics, statistics and data analysis. During the data science studies, you will deepen your knowledge in these subjects and learn to analyze real-world problems related to complex and big data. You will capitalize on the wide range of application areas of big data in technology, environmental and life sciences, as well as in business and economics.

Short description

Programming, computer science and data mining will give you basic skills in Data Science. Linear algebra and statistics are offered as optional courses if you lack these subjects in your bachelor degree. You will complement this basis with two specialization courses in one of the following areas: Geographical Modelling and Analysis, Geographical Database Systems, Geographical data Mining, Climate Modelling Biostatistics, Biophysics, Bioinformatics, Computational Neuroscience, Energy Physics, Building Structures, Building Performance Simulation and Economics. In your 30 ECTS master thesis, you will apply your data science competence to a specific task and hone your problem-solving skills.

English Language Requirements

  • Minimum required score: 7

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).   • Minimum required score: 92

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Bachelor's degree

Higher Education Entrance Qualification and a completed bachelor's degree comparable to a Norwegian bachelor's degree included a specialization worth 80 ECTS.

Applicants with a Norwegian degree in Engineering must have the courses Mathematical Methods I, II and III (or comparable) and Statistics (worth 30 ECTS) included in their degree. Other applicants must have at least 30 ECTS Mathematics courses and 5 ECTS Statistics courses.

There is a minimum mark requirement of C for admission.
