MA Teaching English for Academic and Professional Purposes (TEAPP) is a one year full-time, or two years part-time, programme for experienced language professionals that wish to develop an understanding of the teaching and learning of English for specific academic and professional contexts.

This programme is particularly suitable for teachers, teacher trainers, language school directors, curriculum developers, inspectors, lecturers, materials writers, and people that have already had some involvement with specialist English teaching and learning.

MA Teaching English for Academic and Professional Purposes will give you a deeper understanding of the background, theories, practices and research in academic and professional English.

You will be ready to apply this knowledge to specific academic and professional situations, whether they are in the classroom, in course design, in evaluation, or in other academic and professional situations.

The programme will help you analyse the learning requirements of a group of language learners, and design, teach and evaluate a programme of study.

Year 1

Compulsory modules
Critical Study allows you to design and undertake a small-scale research project related to your own interests in the field of education.

Learning and Teaching in TESOL examines the approaches and principles that TESOL teachers can use to teach the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Investigating Language for TESOL provides you with the skills to describe language in terms of sounds, words, grammar and discourse, and considers how you can analyse learners' language to understand their language development.

Issues in English for Academic Purposes examines how you decide what you should teach to specific groups of learners, how you might teach them, and how you could assess whether they have learnt what you want them to learn.

Corpora in TESP will help you identify what language specific groups of learners need to learn, and reveals how you can utilise computer software to inform your curriculum design and effectively direct student self-learning.

Optional modules
You then choose one or two of the following modules.

* Directed Study in Education
* The Practice of Supporting Language Teacher Learning
* Learning and Teaching Vocabulary
* Grammar, Learning and Teaching
* Teacher Education for TESOL
* Materials Development for TESOL
* Language Learning and Teaching with ICT - Online

If you are not a native speaker of English, then you will need to meet the following English Language requirements. Please note that our TESOL programmes have different requirements.

In exceptional cases, we may consider an application from a student that may not quite meet these requirements. Such students would be required to study an English course at the Leeds University Language Centre to improve their proficiency.
