Microelectronics has not only triggered the enormous growth in information and communication technologies but it has also become an important factor in many other areas. In recent years, technologies originally developed for microelectronics have been increasingly applied to the fabrication of miniaturised systems in electromechanical, electro-optical, analytical or biomedical applications. The new discipline is called microsystem technology. The future development will certainly result in the integration of microsystem components with microelectronic devices. In order to be able to cope with this challenge the TUHH has introduced the innovative master´s program in microelectronics and microsystems which combines both aspects. The program consists of various required elective courses covering the fields of communication, computer science and signal processing.
The standard duration of the course is two years. In the first year, students take part in lectures, exercises and laboratory work. A project and a subject-specific seminar or a process design course take place in the third semester. The course is completed with a six-month Master's thesis in the fourth semester.
The technological challenges of modern society and the requirements of the globalised labour market call for an excellent engineering education as well as for a sound additional qualification in the fields of business and management, soft skills and humanities. Therefore, the international Master's degree courses at TUHH include a minimum number of non-technical compulsory elective courses.
The major part of the cost of education at TUHH is financed through taxes. Students only have to pay a moderate tuition fee of 375 Euro per semester. Apart from that, there is a semester contribution of ca. 250 Euro per semester including an administrative fee, a social fee for the student service organization and the student union as well as the payment for a six-month Hamburg public transport ticket. Thus, the total tuition and semester fee for the two-year programme amounts to ca. 2500 Euro.
The program comprises a set of courses which address four more specific areas of the subject:
- Computer Science and Signal Processing
Special emphasis is given to training which prepares young engineers to work in teams and in an international environment. The project work is a six-week full-time activity. Under the supervision of a university lecturer the student will be introduced to practical problems and scientific working methods. The project work can be performed at the TUHH, at an external institution which is not part of the university or abroad. The Master's Degree Course is concluded with the master's thesis. Here students are expected to show that they are able to handle a scientific problem independently within a maximum period of six months. The master's thesis can be performed at the TUHH or at an institution which is not part of the university. In any case it is supervised by a university lecturer of TUHH.
Lectures on the fundamental principles of each subject are given by professors. Tutorials concentrating on solving basic and applied problems as well as laboratory work in smaller groups are given by teaching and research assistants. Further support is provided by student's tutorials. Some 20 to 25 hours a week are scheduled as supervised instruction and a similar additional amount of time is estimated to be needed for individual study.
Teaching the methodology and logic of engineering - "learning to think" - is a key aspect of the TUHH studies. Only in this way can one acquire the knowledge to keep pace with rapid technological change. This sound theoretical foundation is rounded off by a well-balanced mixture of practical application in internships, projects and thesis work. It should be noted that students at TUHH are trained to think and decide for themselves, to learn and work independently as well as in international teams representing many different academic, national and cultural backgrounds. TUHH promotes interdisciplinary research, teaching and learning. Students will be integrated into research and development projects at an early stage; this facilitates a smooth transition to working life.
The profile of higher engineering education at TUHH focuses on research and application, including practical training in industry. It is characterised by features such as humanism, the Humboldt Principle of unity of research and teaching, and a solid mathematical and scientific foundation. The base of knowledge covers a wide range, and priority is given to knowledge of methodology as opposed to the mere repetition of knowledge. This allows quick adaptation to new fields of technology and new branches of employment. A solid and comprehensive education gives rise to the qualification and personality for a promising professional or academic career.
Applicants should hold a Bachelor's or equivalent degree in engineering - preferably specializing in electrical engineering - and must show a very good previous academic performance as well as sufficient proficiency in English by passing TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 (paper-based) / 213 (computer-based) / 79 (internet-based) or IELTS with a minimum score of 6.5. Apart from that, applicants are expected to take the GRE General Test.
No work experience is required.
The establishment of the International Academic Programmes at TUHH has been sponsored and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Association of German University Rectors (HRK). The expertise and support of these organisations contributes to the high quality of the programme. In addition to that, the master's degree courses at TUHH have been accredited by ASIIN. ASIIN is a registered German accreditation agency which specialises in accrediting degree programmes from the fields of engineering, informatics/computer science, the natural sciences and mathematics. ASIIN was officially accredited by the German Accreditation Council ("Akkreditierungsrat") on 12 December 2002. It enjoys broad international recognition and maintains a closely-woven network of international contacts. Since 11 June 2003 ASIIN is a provisional member of the Washington Accord.
