This one year course is designed for graduates from a wide range of backgrounds who wish to seek a postgraduate academic qualification in oil and gas accounting. The award should open up opportunities either for further study, for example a PhD, or it may enable career development in the oil and gas industry or in government departments or regulatory agencies concerned with the exploitation of oil and gas resources.
The international oil and gas industry is short of qualified staff in oil and gas accounting and this industry is one of the most important sectors within the global economy.
Managing oil and gas resources requires a deep knowledge and understanding of the drivers which impact on this globally important sector. It is vital that all organisations have knowledge of the financial and accounting implications of the future global economy where oil and gas resources are increasingly scarce and where the volatility of pricing of such resources is already a recurring feature in the global press.
Contents
Your core course will include essential foundation areas of management accounting, financial accounting and finance. The second semester further develops the international elements and deepens your knowledge of the oil and gas sector. Throughout the course the emphasis is placed on contemporary and emerging energy topics which you will often explore through case studies. You will also develop your research and interpersonal skills via our integrative seminar course which will expose you to the latest thinking in this area.
How you learn

In addition to attending lectures, you will be required to contribute actively to group and seminar discussions. You will be able to develop your own specialist knowledge of the oil and gas sector through highly relevant and contemporary modules and your dissertation, which will develop and deepen your knowledge. You will work in teams, prepare case analysis or develop scenarios, and deliver presentations using professional tools.
How you are assessed
Assessment is diverse to reflect the broad range of knowledge and skills you will develop throughout the course, and also to recognise the diverse learning style preferences our students bring to our course. You will be assessed through conventional examinations and coursework, and through presentations, team work and skills-based tasks.
Requirements
Honours degree in any field (minimum lower Second class) or equivalent.
Entry with advanced standing, and with qualifications other than those stated, will be in line with the Universitys policy and regulations.
Applicants whose prior study profile indicates a minor shortfall in a particular prerequisite subject area may be required to undertake a bridging course (details available on request).
