The Department of Engineering conducts research in response to practical demands in defence, healthcare, manufacturing, marine and service industries, which is supported by grants from the EPSRC, the MRC, the Royal Society, EU, MOD, industry and UK charities. Our ever-evolving range of specialist areas leads research students to successful professional engineering and technological careers. Our students come from all over the UK and many other parts of the world. They are conducting research on a range of subjects including electronics, computer engineering, control and automation, telecommunications, data communications, computer networks and internet technology. Research in the field of Engineering can also be linked to: Computer Science, and Civil Engineering and Surveying.

Research Centres

Mechanical Behaviour of Materials (MBM):Mechanical Behaviour of Materials (MBM) is our primary research centre. It has an international reputation for applied research into fatigue and fracture of engineering materials and components. It is also a leading centre for applied research into biomechanics and biomaterials in musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and biological systems.Mechanical Engineering:In Mechanical Engineering we have six research groups: Aerospace Materials; Biomechanical Engineering; Design Engineering; Manufacturing Engineering; Advanced Polymers and Composites; Thermo-Fluid, Petroleum and Energy Engineering.Intelligent and Networked Systems:There are four research groups in Intelligent and Networked Systems : Engineering Education; Intelligent and Autonomous Systems; Systems Engineering; Telecommunications and Networked Systems.Thermo-Fluid, Petroleum and Energy Engineering research group:The Thermo-Fluid, Petroleum and Energy Engineering research group includes: Computational Fluid Mechanics, Multiphase Flow and Heat Transfer, Thermal and Renewable Energy Systems, and Enhanced Oil and Gas Recovery Flow Assurance.

Academic Requirements

  • A good honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject or a master's degree in an appropriate subject. Exceptionally, equivalent professional experience and/or qualifications will be considered.
  • English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 with no component score below 6.0.
