On this Applied and Professional Ethics (Online) course, students learn about different approaches to ethical problems, examining both the philosophical literature on applied ethics, and real-life case studies. These are drawn from a variety of professional contexts, ranging from business and accountancy to the computer industry, and from environmental issues to decisions made by engineers.

Programme Structure

To gain the MA students need to complete 180 credits. The course is made up of eight taught modules (15 credits each) and a dissertation (60 credits):

  • Professional Issues 1
  • Agents and Professional Responsibility
  • Professional Issues 2: Privacy and Confidentiality
  • Professional Issues 3: Consent and Contracts
  • Justice: Fairness, Equality, and Diversity
  • Global Environmental Ethics
  • Business Ethics
Students also have the opportunity to replace one of the taught modules with a project module, in which they will undertake a piece of detailed research in an area that interests them, usually relating to their workplace practice.

Academic Requirements

While some students who come on the course have already studied philosophy formally, previous study of philosophy is not a requirement. The course is designed for those coming to the study of ethics or professional ethics for the first time.

Candidates should normally be graduates or holders of an equivalent qualification. Where a candidate is not a graduate, relevant professional experience is taken into account. The key attributes sought are a willingness and ability to think through problems in a reasoned and independent way. Those who enrol on the course will be given advice on preparatory readings.

Applicants for whom English is not their first language need to meet the University’s minimum requirements for English language proficiency. It is University policy that students lacking a first degree are normally registered for the postgraduate diploma in the first instance, with a view to upgrading to the masters programme where appropriate, and subject to satisfactory progress.

Funding

We are pleased to have secured funding for a number of fees scholarships for the MA in Applied and Professional Ethics.

Scholarships will cover a proportion of the academic fees, mostly up to half the value, more rarely up to the full value. For part-time students (who take the course over two years) the scholarship is subject to review at the end of the first year.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, which will be assessed by considering the candidate's application to the University and supporting documents, and the interview conducted as part of the admissions process.

Scholarship applications must be received by June 30th in the year in which you intend to start the programme.
