The region of Algarve is a natural laboratory for Tourism Economics and Regional Development. Hence, this Master's Program aims not only to provide students with state of the art knowledge on these fields, but also to explore its practical applications. Our motto is: Bridging Theory and Practice.
The Tourism Economics and Regional Development programme is offered at the University of Algarve.
Integrated in a Double Degree Program, this Master also allows students to access the Master in Economics of Tourism: Monitoring and Evaluation, offered by the University of the Balearic Islands (Spain).Students who conclude our Master can also obtain the Degree of Master in Economics of Tourism: Monitoring and Evaluation, by spending a semester at the University of the Balearic Islands and approving in 30 ECTS.
The Master in Tourism Economics and Regional Development is accredited by the Portuguese Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education - A3ES.
The Master lasts for 3 semesters and comprises a total of 90 ECTS. The courses, all taught in English, are offered during the first three quarters and cover 60 ECTS. The Final Master Work (Dissertation, Project or Internship) takes place in the third semester and is associated with 30 ECTS.
The Master Program is coordinated in Portugal by a Directive Board, headed by Pedro Pintassilgo. Internationally the coordination is undertaken by Jafar Jafari, a world known scholar in the field of Tourism Studies.

The Master Program is aimed at graduates in Economics or Business Administration. Graduates in other scientific domains, such as Tourism, can also apply. However, their admission may require attending some undergraduate courses in Economics.
All courses will be taught in English. Thus, a good English proficiency is required.

Documents in English, Portuguese, Spanish or French do not require translation. Documents in any other language must be translated into English or Portuguese.
The award recognises studying abroad as a positively life changing experience for many students as well as promoting intercultural understanding and tolerance. Successful candidates will receive up to £10,000 to be applied toward the cost of tuition fees.
The Faculty of Economics, University of the Algarve, aims to attract talented students to its Master Programme in Tourism Economics and Regional Development. For the coming academic year, Merit Scholarships will be made available by the Faculty for the most outstanding candidates enrolling in the programme.
Applicants need to apply for a Merit Scholarship in a letter, written in English, addressed to the Director of the MSc in Tourism Economics and Regional Development, Prof. Pedro Pintassilgo. The written application should be accompanied by two letters of recommendation regarding the academic qualities of the applicant, a certified copy of the undergraduate diploma and a certified copy of the grades obtained. The application for admission to the MSc in Tourism Economics and Regional Development and a request for a scholarship should be made simultaneously.
The application should be submitted until July 15, with respect to a scholarship for the academic year.
All outstanding students, with a BSc in Economics, Management or Tourism are eligible for applying to our Academic Merit Scholarship.
Applicants will be selected based on their C.V., marks on BSc courses, and letters of recommendation. Scholarships will be awarded neither to applicants who already obtained a Master’s degree nor to applicants who have been granted another scholarship covering the tuition fee.
Applicants will be informed of the final decision by 25th July.
There are two Academic Merit Scholarships available, which only cover the tuition fee.
Academic Merit Scholarships are only awarded to applicants who are admitted to the MSc in Tourism Economics and Regional Development. A scholarship granted for the academic year cannot be transferred to another academic year. Failing to enroll in the MSc programme entails forfeiture of the scholarship.
