Description
The MRes in Religion and Culture offers a framework within which you can develop knowledge and skills in the social, cultural and theological study of religion and lived faith in contemporary society. Depending on your individual interests, studies can include attention to formal religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism; in the context of contemporary Western culture this can include alternative/New Age spiritualities, or alternative sources of meaning that are not conventionally thought of as religious. You can also study religion in different regional contexts, looking at anthropological, sociological, historical and cultural issues.
The University of Birmingham is an excellent centre for the study of religion and culture. It has built up good relationships and partnerships with Birmingham's many different communities, and such a rich cultural mix means that it provides an ideal setting to study the relations between Religion and Culture. The city is recognised as one of the most multicultural cities in Europe, with representation from most religious traditions.
Postgraduate teaching and research in the area of religion and culture has been increasingly a popular and important part of the department's work for a number of years, and a large number of students have undertaken taught modules and research dissertations in this area.

This is a research degree that includes taught components from the corresponding MA programme where applicable; it may be followed as an end in itself, but also provides an excellent foundation for subsequent doctoral research. The programme comprises three 20-credit modules; you take a compulsory Research Methodology module, two optional modules, and complete a 20,000-word thesis.
