The programme provides a springboard into a career that involves a working knowledge of scientific research in academia and industry. It is designed for graduates with a BSc in the life sciences and is also suitable for graduates from other science disciplines and for intercalating and fully qualified MBBS or BDS students.
The programme enables you to experience an internationally competitive research area, predominantly in academia but also potentially in industry. If you register for an integrated MRes/PhD, MRes/MD or MRes/DDS you will be allocated projects that are relevant to your proposed PhD or MD, or DDS programme.
It provides training in contemporary medical and molecular biosciences through three subject-knowledge modules including those in biotechnology and business enterprise, professional and key skills training, and a 24-week laboratory-based research project.
Subject-based modules in Biotechnology and Business Enterprise focus on how to turn breakthroughs made in the research laboratory into successful biotechnology companies. Subjects covered include:
* business models
* securing funding from venture capitalists and other sources
* establishing licensing, contracts and legal ownership
* critical aspects of business planning and project management
* the science of the biotechnology industry and processing.
Presentations and workshops are led by entrepreneurs, academics with business experience and business and legal advisers.
You will complete the following compulsory modules:
MMB8038 Medical Biotechnology, Enterprise and Innovation in Industrial Bioscience

An upper-second-class Honours degree, or international equivalent, in a medical, science or related discipline, is preferred. Practical laboratory work experience is desirable, although not essential.
Applicants whose first language is not English require a minimum of IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.5 in all sub-sections), Pearson's PTE Academic Test 62 or equivalent.
International applicants require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance certificate prior to obtaining their visa and to study on this programme.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa.
