A graduate of the IInd level of studies has a good knowledge of the basis of sciences and in-depth knowledge regarding biological processes occurring on a molecular level, as well as specialised subjects covered by this curriculum. This knowledge enables describing, explaining and exploiting various biological processes. A graduate of this Masters programme is prepared to work in the area of:

  • directed genetic modification of microorganisms and cells of higher organisms,
  • directing of processes of biosynthesis and biotransformation,
  • analysis of intracellular processes,
  • isolation and purification of bioproducts,
  • medical diagnostics.

The graduates are well prepared to work in research and development institutions, and depending on a chosen specialisation in laboratories focused on medicine, pharmacology, environmental protection and agriculture

Academic Requirements

All candidates in order to confirm their registration are required to submit the following documents:
  • scanned copy of application form printed from the individual OAS account and signed by the candidate,
  • scanned copy of the higher education diploma (at least undergraduate) or other document of graduation from higher education programme obtained abroad, certifying the holder's right to apply for graduate programmes in the country of issue, considered to be equivalent to respective Polish higher education diploma of at least undergraduate programme, and when the candidate does not have one yet upon registration, scanned copy of a certificate issued by the granting institution confirming completion of higher education final examination (diploma examination) and including information of holder's right to apply for graduate programmes in the country of issue, together with final examination grade, diploma dissertation grade and higher education diploma grade and grade average established in accordance with granting institution regulations,
  • scanned copy of both sides of identification card and in case of non-Polish citizens scanned copy of passport photograph page,
  • scanned copy of diploma supplement or official transcript and if the candidate does not have it yet, scanned copy of student’s record book (indeks), or other document including a full list of courses completed and grades received,
  • Evaluation form – filled out and singed by the tutor, available on Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology website: http://www.wbbib.uj.edu.pl/dla-kandydatow/rekrutacja/molecular-biotechnology (delivered by mail to the address of the unit responsible for the application process that can be found in the study programme card in ‘contact’ tab),
  • translation into English or Polish, certified by a sworn translator, of all submitted documents issued in a language other than English or Polish.
Candidates who hold higher education diploma obtained outside Poland are required to submit additionally the following documents:
  • higher education diploma obtained outside of Poland is required to be authenticated with apostille (if the country of issuance is a party to the Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents) or legalised.

Documents required upon enrolment

All candidates are required to submit the following documents:
  • original application form printed from the individual OAS account and signed by the candidate, as sent upon registration,
  • two photographs (35 mm x 45 mm) taken without head covering, against light background (according to the guidelines for issuing identity cards),
  • photocopy of Polish maturity certificate or International Baccalaureate diploma (IB), or European Baccalaureate certificate (EB), or secondary school leaving certificate or other document obtained abroad entitling its holder to apply for admission to study programmes in higher education institutions in the Republic of Poland (together with the original document available upon request),
  • photocopy of the higher education diploma (at least undergraduate), or other document of higher education graduation obtained abroad, certifying the holder's right to apply for second-cycle (graduate) programmes in the country of issue, considered to be equivalent to respective Polish higher education diploma of at least undergraduate programme (together with the original document available upon request), or when the candidate does not have one yet upon enrolment, certificate issued by the granting institution confirming completion of higher education final examination (diploma examination) and including information of holder's right to apply for graduate programmes in the country of issue, together with final examination grade, diploma dissertation grade and higher education diploma grade together with written declaration to submit the photocopy of the document (with the original document available upon request) by given deadline – under the pain of board denying admission,
  • photocopy of both sides of identification card; in case of non-Polish citizens: photocopy of passport photograph page (together with the original document available upon request),
  • photocopy of diploma supplement (with the original document available upon request), or original official transcript, or when the candidate does not have one yet upon enrolment, candidate's written declaration to submit the photocopy of the document (together with the original document available upon request) by given deadline – under the pain of board denying admission,
  • photocopy of a proficiency certificate in the language of instruction of the study programme (foreign language) – together with the original document available upon request – or a document issued by the university unit responsible for the study programme certifying that candidate's command of language is sufficient for undertaking studies (does not apply to candidates partaking in the interview, native speakers of the language of instruction, and candidates who had completed secondary school education in this language of instruction),
  • certificates or other documents obtained outside of Poland, other than the IB diploma or EB certificate, are required to be authenticated with apostille or legalised,
  • translation into English or Polish, certified by a sworn translator, of all submitted documents issued in a language other than English or Polish,
  • in case of enrolment by post: declaration of submission of original copies of all documents required upon enrolment for inspection by no later than 1 October 2015 – under the pain of withdrawal from the university.
Upon enrolment, all candidates receive a referral for a medical examination carried out by a doctor of occupational medicine. Candidates are obliged to deliver a medical certificate to the unit responsible for the application process by the deadline established by admission schedule (tab "Dates"). Failure to do so will prevent candidate from beginning studies.Candidates who hold higher education diploma obtained outside Poland are required to submit additionally the following documents:
  • nostrification certificate issued by faculty board of a Polish higher education institution, or candidate's written declaration to nostrify the higher education diploma by the end of the first semester – under the pain of withdrawal from the university; this requirement does not apply to documents issued by higher education institutions functioning within higher education frameworks of: Member States of the European Union, or Member States of the OECD, or Member States of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), or parties to the Agreement on the European Economic Area, or countries with which Poland has signed agreements on mutual documents recognition,
  • higher education diploma obtained outside of Poland is required to be authenticated with apostille (if the country of issuance is a party to the Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents) or legalised.

The final qualification result is a number from 0 to 100 calculated on the basis of the following criteria:

  • analysis of the candidate’s previous education and her or his potential to undertake the programme, according to the transcript of records from the previously completed studies, certified by the university of graduation, graded on the scale of 0–20 points as follows:
    • knowledge in the fields of chemistry, physics and mathematics: up to 5 points,
    • knowledge in the field of biochemistry: up to 5 points,
    • knowledge in the field of cell biology: up to 5 points,
    • knowledge in the fields of microbiology and immunology: up to 5 points, and
  • result of an interview conducted in English, graded on the scale of 0–80 points, that verifies: knowledge in the field of biological sciences, fluency in English, including technical vocabulary in the fields of biology and chemistry, candidate’s predisposition and motivation to study the chosen field.
Candidates who do not hold Polish citizenship are required to submit additionally the following documents:
  • photocopy of document that certifies candidate's legal stay in the territory of Poland, i.e. visa, or temporary/permanent residence permit, or other document that allows for stay in the Republic of Poland (together with the original document available upon request) – if you choose to enrol by post, instead enclose signed written declaration that you will submit this document by no later than 1 October 2015 – under the pain of withdrawal from the university,
  • photocopy of document that certifies candidate's possesion of health insurance or casualty insurance for the period of studying in Poland, or photocopy of the European Health Insurance Card (together with the original document available upon request), or a declaration of taking out the insurance in the National Health Fund (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia) immediately upon start of first semester – if you choose to enrol by post, instead enclose signed written declaration that you will submit this document by no later than 1 October 2015 – under the pain of withdrawal from the university,
  • photocopy of medical certificate confirming lack of health conditions disqualifying the candidate from undertaking study programmes (together with the original document available upon request) – if you choose to enrol by post or do not possess this certificate at the moment of enrolment, instead enclose signed written declaration that you will submit this document by no later than 1 October 2015 – under the pain of withdrawal from the university.
