About

In this program you will study how genomes change over time and how life's molecules interact in networks to build up living organisms. This knowledge about the properties of complete biological systems, and not just their individual parts, is also essential in drug development, treatment of diseases and to improve industrial bioprocesses.

Genomics and Systems Biology also opens the way for an understanding of evolution at the molecular level, which has implications for how we assess the adaptability of organisms to changing environmental conditions, such as climate change.

The Master's Programme in Genomics and Systems Biology is offered at University of Gothenburg, Faculty of Science and it's recommended for students looking for an exciting and interdisciplinary education at the forefront of modern biology.

Career areas

As a graduate student from the Master's Programme in Genomics and Systems Biology you are perfectly suited for the next generation of research challenges in future biotechnology, medicine, pharmaceutical industry or for a career in academia.

Programme Structure

The program includes four in depth courses at the advanced level that you are recommended to take during the first academic year: BIO406 Advanced Functional Genomics 15 credits, BIO403 Advanced Bioinformatics 15 credits,BIO448 Experimental Systems Biology 15 credits and BIO442 Evolutionary Genomics 15 credits, all courses are taught in English. At the end of the programme you will do a thesis.

The program gives you practical knowledge of emerging technologies for large-scale analysis of the molecules of life. The explosive development of technology in this field is interdisciplinary, and research and education lies at the intersection of Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science.

A central aim is to give you the skills to experimentally study all components of a biological system and describe the functional interaction between them in mathematical terms. This modeling enables simulations and predictions about the behavior of the system in various types of perturbations, such as mutations, infections or environmental impact.

The program also provides a good understanding of how genomes change over time as a consequence of for example the use of antibiotics, breeding for desired characteristics and chemicals in the environment.

The program is open to students with a biology background who wish to expand their knowledge in functional genomics, bioinformatics, mathematical modeling, molecular evolution, and experimental and computational systems biology.

Education is strongly problem-oriented and closely linked to current research, such as bioinformatic analysis of genomes and networks analysis of the interactions between the molecules of life. This close link to research train you in formulating and solving current and future life science issues.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:

    6.5

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

    Take IELTS test
  • Minimum required score (Grade B2):

    160

The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.

  • Minimum required score:

    575

The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). The writing part of this test is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. Read more about TOEFL (PBT).

  • Minimum required score:

    90

The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).
