Description
The Master's Programme in Information Technology with a specialization in Web Computing gives you advantage, whether you would like to work with research and development in IT industry or do research at Universities. Having completed your education you will be well prepared for both work with sophisticated computer- and web-based systems and for research and development of advanced computer- and web-based systems. You will have opportunities to work with qualified tasks and to create a basis for good career prospects.
What will you study?
The Master’s Programme in Information Technology with a specialization in Web Computing provides progression within information technology, both in depth and width. You will receive width within the area through courses which are studied during the first term (Fundamentals in Information Technology, Cloud Computing, Web Intelligence, and Open Systems).
During the concluding term you will study courses on research methodology & communication in information technology, and on exploitation of research innovations. You will gain further in depth knowledge through implementing an individual degree project.
Several of the courses are unique and are only available at the University of Skövde. Your studies are built around lectures, literature studies, laboratory work, reflection and discussion.
You can choose to carry out your degree project within the university, or you can work in extended collaboration with a company by identifying a problem there and thus carrying out your degree project within industry. The language of education is English.
After completed studies
The study programme prepares you for advanced tasks in research and development departments in IT industry, and especially at companies which focus on web-based systems. Students having graduated from the University of Skövde are now employed in companies like Volvo IT, Saab Underwater
Systems, the Capgemini Group, Betsson Tech and Asitis.
You also have a career possibility within the University world with good opportunities for further research.
Contents
The study programme provides an extensive knowledge, understanding and a specialization in informatics.
The focus for the specialization is Web Computing, which is an area in informatics/information technology which includes development, use and analysis of software systems and data for the Web. This means that students, during the first semester, study different theories in informatics/information technology and Web
Computing.
In addition, the study programme provides profound knowledge in Cloud Computing, where the use of computers over the Web is fundamental, and where resources such as software are provided as services on an infrastructure that is not controlled by the user. The programme also provides profound knowledge in Web
Intelligence, which is an area where advanced information technology and artificial intelligence is applied to the Web.
Furthermore, the study programme also provides profound knowledge in Open Systems, where different dimensions of openness including open source, open
standards, open data and open hardware, are central to the development of software systems in particular for the Web.
During the second semester, the programme includes courses that provide in-depth knowledge in research methodology and scientific communication as well as the exploitation of innovations from research. The programme ends with an individual degree project, which offers students an opportunity to further deepen their knowledge within a certain area of Web Computing.

Requirements
To be eligible for the course a Bachelor’s Degree in Informatics, or from an area related to Informatics, or the equivalent, is required. A further requirement is proof of skills in English equivalent of studies at upper secondary level in Sweden, known as English course B. This is normally demonstrated by means of an internationally recognized test, e g IELTS, TOEFL or the equivalent.

Funding
Scholarships
The University of Skövde offers some scholarships to students who are attending a Master's programme at our University and are liable for tuition fees. If you are an exchange student, please contact your home university for information about which scholarships they provide.
This page contains information about three types of scholarship grants:

- Scholarships for exchange students from the EU, EEA and Switzerland
1. Scholarships for international master's students liable for tuition fees
The University of Skövde has some scholarships to students attending a Master's programme at our university. The scholarships are tuition fee waivers of SEK 60 000 / year (50% of the tuition fee), and the amount will be deducted from the tuition fee when you receive the invoice. The scholarship granting criterion is academic merits. The scholarship can only be awarded to tuition paying students. Please note that you have to be able to finance the rest of the tuition fee yourself and to cover all the living expenses during your stay in Sweden.
How to apply for a scholarship at the University of Skövde:
- First apply for studies at University Admissions prior to applying for a scholarship at the University of Skövde, you must apply for one of our master’s programmes at the Swedish official online application service University Admissions. The deadline for applications for the autumn semester 2013 has passed, but at the moment we are still accepting late applications.
- Then apply for a scholarship at the University of Skövde: the scholarship application deadline for the master’s programmes that start in the autumn semester (August 2013) is March 10th, 2013.
- Fill in the Scholarship Application Form. You will need to provide us with the application number you will receive from the website University Admissions when you submit your scholarship application on our website.
Please read the information below with the list of countries (categories 1 and 2) before you apply for a scholarship.
Deadline: March 10th, 2013
The scholarship applications for the autumn semester 2013 may be analyzed in two batches as below:
- Scholarship applications received until March 10th
- Scholarship applications received from March 11th to April 21st
In case the University of Skövde does not grant all scholarships in the first batch of applications, our scholarship committee will work on a second batch after the deadline so that the scholarship applications received after the deadline will also be analysed for the autumn semester. Note that we will not accept scholarship applications for the autumn semester 2013 after April 21st, 2013 and we cannot guarantee that we will be able to grant scholarships in a second batch.
The first batch results will be announced in the beginning of April 2013. In case we have a second batch, its results will be announced in the beginning of May 2013.
Important information:
Please note: students from Category 1 (see list below) can only apply for the Swedish Institute Study Scholarship, while students from Category 2 (see list below) can apply to both the scholarships from the University of Skövde and the Swedish Institute Study Scholarship.
Category 1: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
Category 2: Candidates with citizenship from countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients, except the ones listed on Category 1 and the other following exceptions: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Russia, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine.
2. Scholarships offered by the Swedish Institute
The Swedish Institute offers a range of scholarships for students coming to study in Sweden. For more information about SI's scholarships, please contact the Swedish Institute directly.
3. Scholarships for exchange students from the EU, EEA and Switzerland
If you are an exchange student, please contact your home university for information about which scholarships they provide. The University of Skövde is part of the Erasmus programme, which means that if the University of Skövde has a bilateral Erasmus agreement with your home institution you might be able to study here with an Erasmus grant. We encourage you to pursue this option since the Erasmus scholarships are often very generous.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
