Description

Infectious disease control is a unique one-year multidisciplinary Master's programme given by Södertörns University in collaboration with the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (SMI). It is a sound preparation for future careers in infectious disease control e.g. within the environmental sector or public health agencies.

This programme has an earlier application period and is aimed at applicants who are non-EEA nationals. Application and tuition fees have been introduced for students with citizenship in countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland.

The programme is designed for students with a special interest in the spread and control of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. The emergence and re-emergence of major infectious diseases is a growing and potentially gigantic world problem, especially in developing countries with limited resources. A consequence of globalization is that events in one part of the world may rapidly impact on the local health status in multiple world locations. This programme bridges medical, biological, and environmental aspects of infectious disease epidemiology. You will study infectious diseases both with national and local health perspectives and on how (inter) national strategies have effect on the individual level. Training in statistical data analysis and geographical information systems (GIS) prepares students for the epidemiology module covering the spread and control of infectious diseases in human populations. The 10-week individual project is presented at a final conference including students and lecturers involved in the programme.

Funding

The government has established two scholarship schemes alongside the introduction of fees for students from outside of the EU/EEA/Switzerland.

The first scheme is aimed at students in the twelve countries that Sweden has a long-term development partnership with. These countries are Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

The second scholarship scheme is aimed at particularly well-qualified students from countries outside of the EU/EEA/Switzerland. Central funding is distributed to higher education institutions that will award funding to individual students. These scholarships cover only tuition fees, which means that students will need to cover their own living costs.
