Since 1922 Dredging Engineering and since 1975 Offshore Engineering courses are given at the Delft University of Technology. In 2004 these two specialisations merged and formed the new MSc programme Offshore Engineering, a two-year curriculum leading to the MSc degree in Offshore Engineering. The programme consists of four specialisations: Fixed (Bottom Founded) Structures, Floating Structures, Subsea Engineering and Dredging Engineering.
Students with a BSc degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering can enrol in this programme. Students with a different background should first consult the staff of Offshore Engineering to explore the possibilities.
Offshore Engineering is multidisciplinary and is a cooperation between Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology.
Offshore & Dredging Engineers make structures such as fixed and floating platforms for the oil and gas industry. They also design undersea pipelines and other underwater equipment for this sector. An important feature is the design of dredging equipment for land reclamation, maintenance and the recovery of embedded minerals in deep-sea locations.
Another application of offshore engineering is the design of offshore wind farms. Offshore & Dredging Engineers are the people who design facilities for the 70% of the earths surface area that is not land.
The offshore & dredging industry is a relatively young, international industry, which has expanded globally in the last fifty years. Almost all new offshore & dredging engineers work in the private sector. The offshore & dredging industrys relative youth means that problems often arise that have never been encountered before. This means that offshore & dredging workers (and students of offshore & dredging engineering) must possess a great deal of ingenuity and demonstrate initiative in addressing and resolving problems.
The overall objective of the Delft University of Technology Offshore Engineering MSc Degree curriculum is to prepare its participants to work in and later lead teams of engineers designing all sorts of man-made objects to be used in localized areas of the (deeper) sea.
The entire MSc curriculum lasts two academic years (120 ECTS). The courses which make up the offshore engineering MSc curriculum are divided into the core curriculum and a specialisations of choice.
Generally speaking, each participant is expected to include the following in his or her own study programme:
This section outlines course requirements that are more or less universal - independent of ones further choices. The knowledge and skill conveyed by these activities forms the heart of the offshore engineering curriculum; nearly all of the subsequent offshore engineering courses build upon these.
Offshore Engineering includes three specialisations. These are: Bottom Founded Structures, Floating Structures and Dredging Engineering:
Fixed, Bottom-Founded Structures include the fixed tower structures with a piled foundation, but also other structures such as jack-up structures in their elevated operating position or even monopole structures now being used for offshore wind energy applications. Of the roughly 9000 offshore structures in place around the world, a majority is of the fixed type, and even today the majority of new offshore structures being built is of this type.
There are many types of floating offshore structures. Ship-type vessels are used commonly to support drilling rigs in deeper water - often at more remote locations. Semi-submersible platforms are used for this purpose as well and to support many other activities for which a relatively stable operating base is needed. More recent developments include tension leg platforms - a sort of tethered semi-submersible - and spar platforms.
The dredging engineering specialisation involves the design of equipment for moving solids from, to, or over the bottom of the sea in water depths where offshore engineers normally work. The design of more conventional dredging equipment is discussed more or less along the way. This specialization will always be included in any programme focused on deep seadredging.
What is required to be considered for admission to an MSc programme? Please note: if you do not meet all the formal requirements, it is no use applying.
1)A. A good university Bachelor's degree in a main subject closely related to the MSc programme to which you are applying, with good grades on the key courses.
orB. A proof that you have nearly completed a Bachelor's programme in a main subject which is closely related to the MSc programme to which you are applying, with good grades on the key courses.
Exceptions: Management of Technology, Engineering and Policy Analysis and Science Education & Communication, to which all students holding any Bachelors of technology or science / engineering degree may be admitted.
2)A Bachelor's Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 75% of the scale maximum, unless specific requirements are defined for the country in which you obtained your Bachelors degree:
Please note: if you have not graduated yet your CGPA must meet the requirements at the time of application.
3)Proof of English language proficiency:
Only nationals from the USA, U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are exempt from the proof of English language proficiency requirement. Applicants who obtained a bachelors degree in one of the mentioned countries, are also exempt from the proof of English language proficiency requirement.
Certificates older than two years are not accepted. As the whole process of collecting information, registering for the tests and receiving the test results may take several months, we advise you to register for the IELTS or TOEFL several months before starting your application.
It is allowed to send us a copy of your test results, please check the application documents for detailed information.
4)A clear and relevant essay in English (1,000 - 2,000 words) addressing the following:Your motivation for taking the MSc programme of your choice.
5)Two reference letters in English, French, German or Dutch:
If you have not yet graduated or do not have work experience, you need to provide two letters from professors or assistant professors from the faculty at which you are studying.
6)An extensive résumé (curriculum vitae) written in English.
7)Proof of identity
8)Please note:Applicants for Architecture Urbanism & Building Sciences, Design for Interaction, Integrated Product Design and Strategic Product Design are required to upload a digital portfolio. Please note that only uploaded portfolios will be processed. The programme specific portfolio requirements are described on the following pages:
| IELTS band: | 6 |
| CAE score: | 60(Grade A) |
| TOEFL internet-based test score: | 90 |
Numerous scholarships are awarded to admitted students with exceptional promise and outstanding academic achievement by the university, its faculties, departments and industry partners. Consideration for these scholarships requires students to have been admitted to their MSc Programme. Make sure you submit your application as early as possible to be in time for all the scholarship deadlines. More information: www.scholarships.tudelft.nl.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
