This course will support your learning in career guidance, and contribute to your professional development.
It's offered by the International Centre for Guidance Studies (iCeGS) - a centre for excellence at the cutting edge of research and professional development within the career guidance sector.
You'll have the flexibility to complete this online course at your own pace (up to a maximum of six years), which means you can fit your study around your other commitments.
We've developed this course for anyone who is interested in, and has current experience of, careers guidance to support lifelong learning.
For example practitioners, researchers, teachers or managers working in the following areas:
* Schools, colleges and guidance services for young people
* Services to support information, advice and guidance for adults
* Connexions services
* Training providers
* British Forces' education and guidance services
* University guidance and careers services
* Guidance research services.
During this course you'll develop an in depth knowledge of theory, practice and policy. You'll continue your professional development (CPD) by reviewing your own practice, developing research skills and keeping up to date with the latest developments in guidance.
You'll be allocated a personal tutor who will be an expert in the field and will work with other students through online discussions. Our ask iCeGS library and information service, which is a unique career guidance research, and literature resource, will be available for you to use throughout the course, to support your learning.
Your career
When you have completed this course you will be able to continue your career in the guidance and related sectors.
You could work in career services companies, adult guidance services, the Connexions service, young people's services, further and higher education, and the voluntary sector. You could also work in a school or be self employed. Julie Blant who graduated from this course is now a Deputy Director for the Postgraduate Careers Service within Nottingham University's Business School.
The course is broken down into stages, so you can achieve related qualifications: Postgraduate Certificate in Education, Postgraduate Diploma in Education: Guidance Studies and MA Education: Guidance Studies.
The online learning approach is similar to any other type of study. You'll be allocated a personal tutor, work with other students, have classroom (virtual and/or face-to-face) discussions and submit assignments.
You'll have access to the Ask iCeGS Library and Information Resources and National Guidance Research Forum (NGRF) website as well as access to iCeGS events.
You'll normally need:
* experience in education guidance, counselling, workforce development or related sectors
* an undergraduate degree (minimum second class award) or equivalent
* to provide a CV detailing your academic and work experience. Please include a statement that identifies your motivation for undertaking the programme, ie career development, personal interest etc. Tell us about your experience within the guidance field; is it as a practitioner, manager, trainer or researcher? How do you see this programme supporting your aspirations?
You're normally required to have one of the following English Language qualifications:
* IELTS 6.0
* TOEFL (paper-based) 550
* TOEFL (computer-based) 213
* TOEFL (online) 93
* GCE O level English Language Grade C
* GCSE English Grade C.
Applications from prospective students with extensive and relevant work experience at an appropriate level are welcome.
